Smart Gilas escaped Egypt in the quarters and will meet Lebanon in the semis...
Gilas finished 3rd eventually... defeating Syria in the fight for 3rd... they are now looking for a new import since, according to them, they are not confident that their 2nd import will be the same after his leg injury... pero may balita na may attitude daw... he claimed that he had injury in his one leg pero nakalimutan yata at naging yung isang leg ang nagkaroon ng injury nung nasa practice siya... The team mgt. decided that instead of outright inclusion to the team, they will hold try-outs to really find those who are really interested... hindi ko alam ang pangalan ng bagong prospect pero former Arkansas Razorback......

Smart Gilas quintet gets No. 2 seed by People's Journal Wednesday, 20 January 2010 20:38 DUBAI—Smart Gilas steered clear of danger after ending up with Egypt’s Al Jazeera in the quarterfinals of the 21st Dubai International Basketball Tournament here. After finishing with a 3-1 record, Gilas grabbed the No. 2 seeding in Group B behind Al Jalaa of Syria, which swept its elimination-round assignments. The Syrians will meet the United Arab Emirates national team in the crossover quarterfinals. Al Riyadi of Lebanon topped Group B after stunning Mahram, Iran’s national team, and will face another Lebanese ball club, Champville, which landed fourth in Group B. Mahram also advanced into the next phase, getting a clash with Zain of Jordan, and turning an expected championship match into a quarterfinal face-off. “They’re not so tall but they are aggressive and sometimes play dirty,” said RP coach Rajko Toroman. The Serbian coach noted that the Egyptians have a uniform ceiling of 6-foot-4 to 6-foot-6 except for their import, 6-foot-10 Jarred Merill, who played for Oklahoma Christian University. “He’s left-handed and has a good range so we have to take care of him,” said Toroman. Injuries on Dylan Ababou, Chris Tiu and Jamal Sampson have started to weigh down on Gilas. Ababou will wear a mask after fracturing his nose against Zain, Tiu sustained several bruises on the legs and arms aside from a busted lip against UAE’s Al Nasr while the 6-foot-11 Sampson is still wary about his left knee. “We have to be at the same level if we want to win. We should be very smart and aggressive. They don’t play high-quality basketball like Zain, Riyadi or Al Jalaa but they have some special warriors,” said Toroman. Despite the wear and tear of playing in a highly physical atmosphere, Toroman remains optimistic of their chances in the semifinals. “I’m confident that we will make it because we’re playing good in this tournament,” said Toroman. journal.com.ph/index.php/sports/1336-smart-gilas-quintet-gets-no-2-seed

Six new events in Guangzhou AsiadBy FRANCIS SANTIAGO January 12, 2010, 4:06pmSix new sports event will be introduced in the 16th Asian Games set in China late this year, Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) spokesperson Joey Romasanta announced Tuesday. Romasanta, who attended the 1st world press briefing of the Asian Games last month, said cricket, dance sport, dragon boat, roller sports, weiqi or go (board game) and xianqi (Chinese chess) will debut in the quadrennial meet set Nov. 12 to 27 in Guangzhou. Of the six events, the Philippines can only participate in the dance sport and dragon boat. The total number of gold medals at stake in the four events has yet to be finalized. Still, Romasanta remains optimistic of the country’s chances in the quadrennial event. The Philippines collected four golds, six silvers and nine bronzes during the Doha Asian Games four years ago. “We have a ratio to number of participant to events and medals. I think meron tayong panlaban diyan. I think we will have a very credible performance in the Games,” said Romasanta in Tuesday’s PSA Forum at the Philippine Sports Commission dining hall. Romasanta said the POC board will convene next week to form a task force which will set the requirements and criteria for all athletes seeking to participate in the meet. Romasanta also said they are going to tackle the issue on who will be the country’s chef de mission for the event although Steve Hontiveros, the former POC secretary-general, appears to have an inside track for the job. Meanwhile, Romasanta said the POC will start to distribute accreditation forms for all media groups for the quadrennial meet. Accreditation for media starts Jan.15 until April 30. “We hope to comply with the deadline,’ Romasanta said. Romasanta, who joined the group that toured the playing venues, said everything is almost ready although some stadiums are still undergoing renovations. The Philippines is coming off a surprise finish in the Laos Southeast Asian Games where it collected 35 gold, 38 silver and 51 bronze medals to improve to fifth overall, a notch higher than the previous biennial meet in Thailand. So far, only karatekas May Soriano and Marna Paviliano are assured of berths to the Asian Games on account of the recent showing. Soriano was bronze medalist in an Asian meet while Paviliano is the lone gold medalist in karatedo in the previous SEA Games. Manila Bulletin

Construction workers disassemble parts of the Engineering sports complex near the España gate to pave way for the construction of a new four-story sports complex in time for UST’s quadricentennial anniversary in 2011. Inset is the miniature model of the complex that will house a basketball court, an indoor track, and pool, among others. Photo by GIANNINA NICOLAI P. MELICORVatican OKs sports complexBy Charizze L. Abulencia and Mary Athena D. de Paz FINALLY, a sports complex fit for champs. Construction has begun for the nearly P800-million UST Sports Complex after the Vatican gave its “blessing” to the project, which the University aims to complete in time for its quadricentennial celebration. University officials sought the Holy See’s approval early this year apparently to avoid a repeat of the 2007 cancellation of the P3-billion project to redevelop the UST Hospital, which the Dominican hierarchy had found to be in violation of ecclesiastical law. UST is a Pontifical university, directly under the supervision of the Pope. But in a letter dated April 20, Undersecretary Fr. Sebastiano Paciolla, O.P. of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life under the Holy See said there was actually no need for Vatican clearance since the amount required to build the four-story gym – P788,676,000 -- was below the ceiling set by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines. “The cost of [investment for the gym] is met from the internal resources of the University, and thus does not adversely affect its patrimonial situation,” Paciolla stated. “Neither does the project involve any mortgage, lien, loan, renting or leasing in the sense of ‘alienation.’The letter was in response to the request for approval sent to the Vatican by Fr. Roberto Ombres, O.P., procurator of the Order of Preachers, on behalf of the Dominican Master General Fr. Carlos Azpiroz Costa, O.P. last March. Michael Malicsi, executive assistant to the Rector, said the letter was some sort of a “clearance” from the Holy See, noting the scrapping of the project to build a 19-story hospital tower nearly two years ago. The Dominican Master General had found the P3-billion loan from a syndicate of banks too big and declared the hospital’s separation from the University illegal, citing Canon Law. This led to a sudden leadership shake-up that saw the resignations of then rector Fr. Ernesto Arceo, O.P., and two others. The proposed sports complex, designed by architects Jose Pedro Recio and Carmelo Rosas, will cover the entire land area occupied by the Engineering sports complex and an adjacent football field. The gym will be converted into an alumni center (see related story). The 65.98 x 76-square-meter structure will house training areas for gymnastics, aerobics, taekwondo, judo, table tennis, fencing, and badminton at the ground floor. It will also include a ticket counter, a museum, a guidance and counselling office, a dance hall for the Salinggawi Dance Troupe, a fitness room, a canteen concessionaire, a bank, and the offices of the College of Rehabilitation Sciences. The main basketball court, surrounded by bleachers rising up to the fourth floor of the building, will be at the center of the second floor, while an indoor track will be built on the third floor. The rooms in the sports complex will also be equipped with sound-proof technology to minimize noise. VarsitarianDapat magkaroon na rin ng bagong write-up ang Varsi tungkol sa alumni center dahil bago at mas pinalaki na ang design… paging Varsitarian… Four-story alumni center soon to riseThe proposed alumni center will take the place of the UST gym near the P. Noval gate. IN THREE years, UST alumni will finally have a place on campus they can call their own. The Office for Alumni Relations is pursuing a plan to establish a four-story alumni center as part of the University’s quadricentennial celebration in 2011. The center will occupy the UST gym, whose façade will be retained, while a new gym will be constructed beside the multi-deck carpark (see story on page 1). Alumni Relations Director Evelyn Songco said the center would serve as a multi-function building for alumni events, and would have lodging rooms for visiting alumni. Officials have yet to finalize the number of lodging and function rooms. The rooms will be named after alumni donors. Details of the renovation are still being discussed and the contractor has yet to be selected. The UST swimming pool, the first Olympic-sized swimming pool in Asia, will still be part of the alumni center and will be refurbished. “The conservationists in the University suggested that the façade should remain because it is one of the oldest buildings in the campus,” said Songco. The UST gym was opened in 1932, five years after the University moved from Intramuros to España Street. “[The center is for the] benefit of our alumni, but the students can also use it. However, the students will have to pay for the use of facilities,” Songco said. The design for the center was chosen by the UST administration from seven winners in a competition among students organized by the College of Architecture in 2008. Abelardo Tolentino Jr., outstanding Thomasian alumni for Architecture, worked on the design to produce the final blueprint. Jennifer Ann G. AmbantaVarsitarian

Maganda ito pero masubaybayan ko ang team... mas maganda pag foreign teams ang kalaban nila... mas excited pa nga ako sa Smart-Gilas kesa sa Powerade... SBP, GMA-7 ink deal for Gilas Mideast tourJanuary 5, 2010, 4:58pmThe Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has entered into an agreement with television network giant GMA-7 to cover the games of the Smart-Gilas Pilipinas National Team in the Middle East. Under the partnership, GMA will air Gilas’ Middle East activities, including holding a special on GMA’s PinoyTV. GMA has also agreed to provide subsidy for the Mideast trip of the National Team and is studying the possibility of even acquiring the tapes of the Dubai tournament for airing on its network. Smart-Gilas is slated to leave Thursday for Doha, Qatar as part of a 17-day tour of the Gulf as it begins preparations for the Asian Games this November in China. The RP team will play two games against the Qatar National Team on January 8 and 9 before participating in the tough 21st Dubai International Tournament from January 14 to 23.Prior to the tournament, Smart Gilas will play exhibition games for the Filipino communities in Dubai as well against a club team from Jordan and the UAE. The RP team, led by coach Rajko Toroman and players Chris Tiu and Dylan Ababou, along with paid a courtesy call to GMA Network, Inc. chairman, president and CEO Felipe L. Gozon and EVP and COO Gilberto R. Duavit prior to the team’s departure. "We fully support the national team, financially, morally and spiritually because we need to have athletes who will represent the country and win. And basketball is the national sport," said Gozon, who warmly welcomed the team that is tasked to bring the Philippines back into the Olympics by 2012. For his part, Duavit said the coverage of Gilas intends to “create a lot of interest in terms of what the national team is doing" especially among OFWs in the places that they will be visiting. SBP Executive Director Noli Eala lauded the partnership as a “milestone agreement that augurs well for the campaign to bring back national pride.”“In behalf of our President Manny Pangilinan, we are very grateful for the support of a respected industry leader like GMA led by visionaries like Chairman Gozon and Mr. Duavit to the Smart-Gilas National Team. The resources that GMA network are providing the team is a big boost in our aggressive campaign to prepare to qualify for the Olympics.” Eala said. “The best part is because of this historic partnership, Smart Gilas will have more interaction with our Filipino communities in Qatar and the UAE. We need all the support and prayers of our countrymen in our quest to bring back pride and glory to the Philippines.” Eala added. The Dubai International tournament will feature teams from Syria, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, and the UAE in what is billed as the “toughest international tournament in the Middle East.”Manila Bulletin

UST’s countdown to 2011 is heritage event of 2009Philippine Daily Inquirer DateFirst Posted 22:05:00 12/28/2009 THE FOREMOST HERITAGE EVENT of 2009 is in the future: The countdown to 2011 when the University of Santo Tomas turns 400 as the oldest university in Asia. Last Dec. 18 during the traditional “Paskuhan,” before 50,000 people at UST’s Plaza Mayor, Rector Magnificus Fr. Rolando V. de la Rosa, OP, started the countdown. With a giant prototype of the UST Quadricentennial watch designed and manufactured by the Swiss watchmaker Swatch, Fr. De la Rosa switched on the clock exactly 400 days before UST’s actual foundation anniversary in 2011. Established in 1611 through the will of Manila Archbishop Miguel de Benavides, OP, and the donation of his personal library, UST may not have been the first school to be founded in the Spanish era, but its resilience amid historical vicissitudes should endow it with the myth of saga. When US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton held her press conference at UST last November and learned that the institution is older than Harvard, she told the Rector: “Now, I would have something to tell them Harvard people.” UST’s achievements are both in the sacred and civil domains. It’s the only university in Asia to have produced canonized saints. It has produced patriots who dominate the pantheon of Philippine national heroes. As Fr. De la Rosa said in a press conference, “UST is the heritage of all Filipinos.” The year ahead, 2010, is expected to underscore the rich heritage of UST: • The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas will issue special commemorative bills and coins, while the post office will issue special commemorative stamps.
• The eight-decades-old Main Building will be declared by the Philippine government a national heritage landmark on Jan. 25.
• Unesco Paris will mount an exhibit on the legacy of UST, the only Asian university to be accorded the privilege.
• The opening of the international exhibit, “Lumina Pundit (Spreading the Light),” at the UST Miguel de Benavides Central Library on June 17 (to run up to January 2011), an exhibition of the University’s priceless collection of rare books and significant historical documents, including “Doctrina Cristiana,” in Tagalog, Spanish and Chinese, the first books printed in the Philippines (by the Dominicans), and academic records of José Rizal, José Burgos, Apolinario Mabini and other Filipino patriots
• Inauguration of the UST alumni center, to be housed in the renovated old UST Gym, an Art Deco structure and the country’s first school gym, on Dec. 19. The UST swimming pool, the country’s first Olympic-size swimming pool, will also be renovated.
• The unveiling of the “Tetra Global” monument, designed and executed by internationally renowned sculptor Ramon Orlina and modelled by Piolo Pascual and Charlene Gonzales.Inquirer

Classical Christmas concert pays tribute to UST heritageCountdown to UST’s 400th anniversary in 2011 to start on Dec. 18THE ANNUAL CLASSICAL CHRISTMAS Concert of the University of Santo Tomas on Dec. 3 made a grand toast to the multifaceted heritage of the Pontifical University. Now on its second year of raising funds for the restoration of the art collection of UST, the concert, attended by some of Manila high-society figures, was held to drumbeat UST’s forthcoming celebrations as it turns 400 in 2011 as Asia’s oldest university. Meanwhile, UST will start its official countdown to its 400th anniversary in 2011 on Dec. 18 during the traditional Paskuhan at the UST Grandstand. Theme of the event is “400 Years of Unending Grace.” To lead the countdown is UST Rector Magnificus and former Commission on Higher Education chair Fr. Rolando V. de la Rosa, OP. During the Christmas concert at the UST Santissimo Rosario Parish Church, the audience was led by Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams, Papal Nuncio to the Philippines, and Italian Ambassador Rubens Anna Fedele. Internationally renownedLeading this year’s performers were tenor Abdul Candao, a former faculty member of the UST Conservatory of Music and now a voice professor at the Vienna Conservatory of Music; the UST Singers; and the UST Symphony Orchestra under Hermegildo Ranera Soprano Rachelle Gerodias, tenor Lemuel de la Cruz and baritone Andrew Fernando also performed. Sounds of a crowing rooster and ringing church bells, reminiscent of the traditional midnight Mass, helped set the mood for the event. Coro Tomasino, Liturgikon Vocal Ensemble, UST Singers and Tiples de Santo Domingo under Eugene Santos opened the show with a medley of Filipino Christmas songs: “Pasko Na Naman,” “Simbang Gabi,” “Noche Buena,” “Sa Paskong Darating.” They were accompanied by the USTeMun do ethnic ensemble. Lemuel de la Cruz performed with the Tiples, the country’s oldest boys’ choir, Franz Schuber’s “Mile Cherubini in Coro” (A Thousand Cherubs in a Choir). De la Cruz then teamed up with a member of the choir to sing the traditional song “Good King Wenceslas.” Conservatory of Music senior Ferleoni Medina and tenor Vincent Evangelista performed “Ave Maria” from “A Winter Symphony.” Voice majors Marie Ann Dominese and Christian Paul Anthony Naga rendered “As Long as There’s Christmas.” Toots Tolentino led the UST Jazz Ensemble in a jamming session of a Christmas medley. Abdul Candao made a powerful rendition of George Bizet’s “Agnus Dei.” The UST Singers, under Fidel Calalang, took the spotlight and performed “Alles was Odem Nat Lobet dem Hern,” “Ave Maria,” “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and “Munting Sangol.” Andrew Fernando gripped the audience next with his mighty rendition of “What Child Is This?” He was later joined by De la Cruz and Gerodias in the moving number “Tecum Principum.” Gerodias, the country’s top soprano, as always shone. With the Liturgikon Vocal Ensemble and Coro Tomasino, she performed “Alleluia” and “The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy.” For the finale, all the performers sang a Christmas medley and enjoined the audience to sing along with them “Silent Night” and “Ang Pasko ay Sumapit.” Cocktails were served at the UST Museum of Arts and Sciences, where guests were treated to the newly restored paintings from the UST collection, such as Severino Fabie’s portrait of José Rizal, as well as his murals, “Santissimo Rosario” and “The Crucifixion.” Part of the donations would also be used to fund scholarships in the UST Conservatory, the country’s biggest music school. Maricris Zobel, co-chair of the concert’s organizing committee with UST Museum director Fr. Isidro Abaño, OP, said the concert sought to pay tribute to UST as a legacy to the Filipino people. “The concert’s role is to gather funds [for the restoration of the UST collection] because I believe the University of Santo Tomas is our heritage, a treasure that we need to preserve,” Zobel said. Countdown to 2011The Dec. 18 Paskuhan will officially start the countdown to 2011 and kick off the celebration of the UST Quadricentennial, Fr. De la Rosa said. Miriam Quiambao, Kim Atienza and JC Cuadrado will emcee the Paskuhan. Among the several grand events to mark the UST quadricentennial are “Lumina Pandit: An Exhibition of Historical Treasures,” an international exhibit to feature the collections from UST’s Miguel de Benavides Central Library, including “Doctrina Cristiana,” the first printed book in the Philippines (published by the Dominicans and printed by the original UST press in 1593); Copernicus’s book on the heliocentric theory; and incunabulae (books before the invention of printing). Other events include the unveiling of Ramon Orlina’s glass-and-brass sculpture, Tetraglobal, modelled by Piolo Pascual and Charlene Gonzales; and the Manila conference of the International Council of the Universities of St. Thomas Aquinas. Established in 1611 through the donation of his personal library by Archbishop Miguel de Benavides, OP , the third bishop of Manila, founded and run by the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), UST was given the titles “Royal” by King Charles III of Spain in 1785, and “Pontifical” by Pope Leo XIII in 1902. It was declared “The Catholic University of the Philippines” by Pope Pius XII in 1947. Alumni include national heroes José Rizal, Marcelo H. del Pilar, Emilio Jacinto, Antonio Luna, Apolinario Mabini, Felipe Agoncillo and Claro M. Recto. (Most of the drafters of the Malolos Constitution were UST alumni.) Other alumni: Presidents Manuel L. Quezon, Sergio Osmeña, José P. Laurel and Diosdado Macapagal; Chief Justices Cayetano Arellano, Victorino Mapa, Ramon Avanceña, Jose Abad Santos, Roberto Concepcion and Andres Narvasa; and National Artists Nick Joaquin, Leandro Locsin, F. Sionil José, Bienvenido Lumbera, Ang Kiukok, Victorio Edades, Rolando Tinio, Daisy Hontiveros-Avellana, Ernani Cuenco, Arturo Luz, Ildefonso Santos and Gerry de Leon. UST is also the only university in Asia to have produced saints. The first Filipino saint, Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila, was a member of a Dominican Marian confraternity and was martyred in Japan in the 17th century along with Dominicans who studied and taught at UST. Even the first Vietnamese saint, Vicente Liem de la Paz, was an alumnus. In October 2007, in the biggest beatification in history, Pope Benedict XVI beatified nearly 500 martyrs of the Spanish civil war, including Fr. Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, a former master general of the Dominican Order, and seven other Dominicans, all of them alumni of UST.
