Pope, Spanish royals not coming for 2011 By CLIFF HARVEY C. VENZON
ASIDE from Pope Benedict XVI, Spain’s king and queen have turned down an invitation to grace the 400th year celebration of the Pontifical and Royal university.
Vice Rector Fr. Pablo Tiong, O.P., in an interview, confirmed that King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia of Spain will not attend UST’s Quadricentennial in January next year.
“They (king and queen of Spain) will designate a special representative, but I do not know if it will be a member of the royal family,” he added.
Tiong said the Spanish throne did not give a reason for the rejection of UST’s invitation.
Last May 7, papal nuncio Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams wrote a letter to Filipino bishops saying the pope won’t make it to the 2011 festivities. He did not state the reason.
CBCP News, the official news agency of the CBCP, reported that the Pope will instead send his representative to grace the event, the name of which will be published on L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican’s newspaper, on November 27.
“The Holy Father will not be coming to Manila for the anniversary, but given the importance of the quadricentennial celebrations of the university, His Holiness will be sending for the occasion his special envoy, whose name will be published in L’osservatore Romano the afternoon of Saturday, 27 November 2010,” A dams said in news published at the CBCP website (cbcpnews.com).
Tiong said the Pope’s non-acceptance of the invitation was expected.
“Inasmuch as we would like that the Pope be around on [January 2011]… we had to be realistic. We are aware of so many factors that may prevent him from coming.
He has his hands full of so many problems and issues right now,” Tiong said.
But Tiong admitted the Pope’s absence in the Quadricentennial will reduce the hype of the celebration.
“[The Pope’s absence] will tone down a bit the level of celebration, but the Pope’s attendance is not absolutely essential, the event will go on,” he added.
“We invited the Pope for the January 2011 celebration and that was the invitation which was refused. We have not invited the Pope for the closing ceremonies,” Tiong said.
Meanwhile, Tiong said the royal couple of Spain were the only heads of state invited to the Quadricentennial, but foreign diplomats were also given invitations.
“The designation ‘royal’ is by now a historical title and not a functional title anymore, in a sense that the title does not oblige doing anything special for the king and queen of Spain,” he said.
In 1785, King Charles III gave the title “Royal” to the University, while in 1902 through a papal decree, Pope Leo XIII bestowed the title “Pontifical” to UST, putting the University directly under the Holy See.
In the last decades, UST was paid visits by popes and a Spanish King: Pope Paul VI in 1970, King Carlos I in 1974 and 1995, and Pope John Paul II in 1981 and 1995. Varsitarian

UST ranks 101st in Asia Leaps by 43 steps to surge past La Salle in Top 200 list
THE UNIVERSITY welcomed the new academic year—and its Quadricentennial—on a high note by securing the 101st spot in the annual listing of Asia’s Top 200 Universities by the London-based Times Higher Education-Quacquarelli-Symonds (THE-QS), UST was tied with Japan’s Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and Thailand’s Prince of Songkla University. Last year, it placed 144th.
De La Salle University trailed behind UST at 106, while no significant changes were seen im the rankings of Ateneo de Manila University and University of the Philippines, which landed 58th and 78th, respectively.
In the field of Social Sciences, the University fell from 75 last year to 83 this year. It also declined in Arts and Humanities, dropping from 55 to 69.
However, UST went notches higher from 85 to 69 in Biomedicine.
But still, the Asian rankings placed UST behind Ateneo in Life Sciences and Biomedicine despite the fact that UST offers more courses, dominates licensure exams, and is the acknowledged pioneer in the field.
Commenting on the results of the survey, Prof. Fortunato Sevilla, member of Malacanang’s Presidential Coordinating Council on Research and Development and former dean of the College of Science, said UST should be thankful that it got into the survey.
“We should be happy about (landing 101st). At least UST has been acknowledged. Imagine how many universities there are in Asia. Last year, UP and Ateneo complained because of their rankings. I think we should view this in a positive light and try to be happy about where we stand now,” he said.
Hong Kong schools got the first two spots: University of Hong Kong, followed by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
Neighboring countries have more schools in the Top 200 than the Philippines: Taiwan has 17, India 12, Malaysia six, and Indonesia six.
Countries which dominated the Top 20 include Japan with eight schools, South Korea with four, Singapore with two, China with two, and Hong Kong with four.
The criteria were global academic peer review (30 percent), citations per faculty (20 percent), student faculty ratio (20 percent), global employer review (10 percent), international faculty(five percent), international students(five percent).
UST failed to get a slot in Natural Sciences and the Information Technology and Engineering categories.
This year saw Ateneo took the lead on each area among Philippine schools except in Life Sciences and Biomedicine, and Social Sciences. UST dropped behind the three Philippine universities in Social Science and Arts and Humanities with scores of 16.20 percent and 17.90, respectively.
But among the Philippine schools, UST was the most improved overall. This was due to the fact that UST landed in the top 10 in one key criterion, citations per faculty. In fact, it placed eighth in the criterion.
“Our researches are entered in the Scopus,” said Fr. Arthur Dingel,O.P., assistant to the Rector for planning and management. “Scopus is a kind of journal wherein all the scientific researches around the world is entered. If we can get to be published in the journal then that would mean added points for us. But the thing is, this year we did not meet the deadline for the journals. We are still in the process of reapplying. If granted, maybe our rank will go higher.”
In the Recruiter Review category, all Philippine schools showed declines in their ranks. UP ranked 22nd (from 10), Ateneo 25th (from 11), La Salle ranked 29th (from 15) and UST 59th (from 21). According to the Asian University Rankings website, the Recruiter Review is like the Academic Peer Review.
But UST’s Waterloo remains Academic Peer Review.
UST landed 90th. Both UP and Ateneo improved their positions, ranking 23rd and 24th, respectively. La Salle fell from 70 to 72.
“There is such a thing as Academic Peer Review wherein deans and presidents of different universities are given survey forms to answer,” Father Dingle explained. “Their questions mainly revolve on what school pioneered in the field of health related sciences and medicine and nursing. The choice of each person would depend heavily on what school advertises the most. UST is still new in this system.”
In International Faculty and Students, no Philippine university figured.
Other local universities figured in some categories. In the Student to Faculty Category, the University of South Eastern Philippines rose from zero to No. 43.
In the category of Student Exchange Inbound, the University of San Carlos and Ateneo de Manila placed 53rd (from 39) and 48th (from 56), respectively.
“Right now we are trying to pattern the University’s website to suit the qualifications of the THE-QS,” Dingle said. “We do hope that our combined efforts in advertising our University would soon bear fruit.” Monica N. LadislaVarsitarian

Smartest hero? Fr. Burgos tops Rizal By Rainier Allan Ronda (The Philippine Star) Updated June 13, 2010 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - The yellowed report cards of the country’s national heroes who attended and earned their degrees from the 399-year old University of Santo Tomas (UST) would provide an interesting revelation to many grade-conscious Filipinos who regard our national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, as the most brilliant of them all.
Fr. Florentino Bolo Jr., O.P., secretary-general of the UST, said that contrary to the popular prevailing notion that Rizal was the most academically superior of the country’s heroes, many of whom studied at the “royal pontifical” university, it was one of the three martyred priests of the famed Gomburza, Fr. Jose A. Burgos, who was “primus inter pares,” or first among equals, if their grades were made the basis of comparison.
“Contrary to the prevailing perception, it was not Rizal who performed most brilliantly based on grades but Fr. Burgos,” Bolo told The STAR Friday night during the soft launch of their “Lumina Pandit” exhibit at the UST’s Miguel Benavides Library.
“Yes, Rizal had all those sobresaliente grades but if you’ll look at the report cards of our other heroes, they all had those sobresalientes. Our scholars here had looked into the report cards of our heroes and, after a comparison of their report cards, we found that the most brilliant among them is Fr. Burgos,” Bolo said.
He added that the martyrdom of Burgos along with the two other priests that made up the Gomburza, Fr. Mariano Gomez and Fr. Jacinto Zamora, was also vital in stirring up patriotism and nationalism among Filipinos against Spanish colonial rule in the years leading to independence.
Bolo said that the yellowed report cards of Philippine heroes and other historical figures were just several of many interesting historical treasures on display at the “Lumina Pandit: An Exhibit of Historical Treasures” that will formally open on June 17.
Founded in 1611, UST boasts of producing the “fathers” of the Philippine nation like Rizal, Gomburza, four Philippine presidents including Manuel Luis Quezon, six Supreme Court justices, and many other public service, legal and medical luminaries.
Associate Professor Giovanna Fontanilla, UST public affairs director, said that aside from the report cards of the UST alumni-heroes the exhibit will also display priceless gems of legacy and learning gathered by the university in its four hundred years of spreading learning among Filipinos.
Fontanilla said rare books and other important historical documents from the sprawling collection of the UST Miguel de Benavides Library will be displayed for those who are interested to learn the country’s rich history.

UST singers get 2 awards in intl festival held in Ireland 05/13/2010 | 10:45 AM
Singers of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in Manila gained honor for the Philippines anew after receiving two special awards at a recent international festival in Ireland.
The Department of Foreign Affairs said the awards were given at the Fleischmann International Trophy Competition at the 56th Cork International Choral Festival in Cork, Ireland, last May 1.
"The two awards are the Lady Dorothy Mayer Memorial Trophy for the performance of a piece in the competition, and the Peace Trophy for the choir who touched the hearts of all who heard them and exemplified the intentions of the trophy's benefactors, the P.E.A.C.E. Movement in Cork," the DFA said, citing a report from the Philippine Embassy in Ireland.
It said the UST Singers were under Professor Fidel Gener Calalang Jr.
Philippine Ambassador Ariel Abadilla commended the UST Singers for ably representing the Philippines in one of Europe's premier international choral festivals.
Founded in 1954, the Cork International Choral Festival is noted for its high competitive standards, excellent organization, and the friendliness of its welcome.
The Festival attracts some 5,000 participants.
Abadilla also thanked the Filipino community in Cork and Dublin for the hospitality they extended to the UST Singers during their visit to Ireland. — LBG, GMANews.TV
Pope not coming to RP for UST quadricentennial anniversary 05/14/2010 | 07:41 AM
Pope Benedict XVI has turned down an invitation to attend this year's 400th founding anniversary of one of Asia's oldest university, the University of Santo Tomas, and will send a representative instead.
Papal Nuncio Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams formally relayed the information to the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) in a May 7 letter.
"The Holy Father will not be coming to Manila for the anniversary, but given the importance of the quadricentennial celebrations of the university, His Holiness will be sending for the occasion his special envoy, whose name will be published in L'osservatore Romano the afternoon of Saturday, 27 November 2010," Adams said in a letter to CBCP president Tandag Bishop Nereo Odchimar.
Excerpts of the letter were posted Thursday on the CBCP news site.
It was the third time that Pope Benedict XVI was invited to visit the Philippines since his installation to the Papacy in 2006, according to the CBCP.
He was invited to grace the Asian Youth Day held in Cavite last November and the second National Congress of the Clergy held at Pasay City last January.
Founded on April 28, 1611, UST holds the distinction of being the only Pontifical University in Asia. It is under the authority of the Holy See as a pontifical university, and was visited by Pope Paul VI on Nov. 28, 1970 and by Pope John Paul II on Feb. 18, 1981 and Jan. 13, 1995. — RSJ/LBG, GMANews.TVPope to skip quadricentennial — nuncio
The papal nuncio has informed Philippine bishops that Pope Benedict XVI won’t attend next year’s quadricentennial celebrations, according to the official news agency of the local episcopal conference.
In a May 7 letter, Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams, apostolic nuncio to the Philippines, told Tandag Bishop Nereo Odchimar, president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), that the pope won’t be present for the 400th year celebration of the University of Santo Tomas.
CBCP News said no reason was given. The 83-year-old Supreme Pontiff will instead send a representative.
"The Holy Father will not be coming to Manila for the anniversary, but given the importance of the quadricentennial celebrations of the university, His Holiness will be sending for the occasion his special envoy, whose name will be published in L'osservatore Romano the afternoon of Saturday, 27 November 2010," Adams was quoted by the CBCP News website as saying.
UST, founded April 28, 1611, is the only pontifical university in Asia. The CBCP story noted that UST had hosted three papal visits: Pope Paul VI on Nov. 28, 1970 and Pope John Paul II on Feb. 18, 1981 and Jan. 13, 1995.Varsitarian

UST ranks 101st on list of 200 top Asian universities
Updated- May 13, 11 p.m.-UST ROSE to No. 101 in the ranking of Asia’s top 200 universities for 2010, breezing past De La Salle University from 144th place last year.
London-based consultancy Quacquarelli Symonds or QS.com placed UST above De La Salle University-Manila, which landed on 106th place, but behind Ateneo de Manila (58th) and state-run University of the Philippines (78th).
UST tied with Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology of Japan, and Prince of Songkla University of Thailand. University of Hong Kong is still No. 1 on the annual listing.
Last year, UST trailed behind the three Philippine universities with UP at the 63rd spot, Ateneo at 86th, and La Salle at 76th.
QS.com cited, among others, the University’s consistent topping of national board exams, the declaration of campus sites as “National Cultural Treasures,” and the number of renowned Thomasian alumni in various fields.
UST dropped out in the earlier listing of the world’s top 500 universities by Times Higher Education-Quacquarelli Symonds or THE-QS.
The Asian survey has a different criteria from the THE-QS listing. There was less weight on Academic Peer Review (from 40 percent to 30 percent) and a new criteria on papers per faculty and citations per paper (15 percent each).
It also took into account inbound and outbound exchange students (2.5 percent each), international students enrolled in universities (5 percent), international faculty (5 percent), student-faculty ratio (20 percent), and a review by Asian employers (10 percent). Jilly Anne A. BulauanVarsitarian4 RP universities remain among top 200 Asian schools GMANews.TV - Friday, May 14
Four Philippine universities made it again to the Top 200 Asian universities list of consultancy Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd. (QS) for 2010, even as this is not really a cause for celebration in a country with about 2,000 institutions of higher education.
Leading the Philippine schools is the Jesuit-run Ateneo de Manila University, which tied Taiwan's National Central University at the 58th spot. Ateneo rose from the 84th spot it occupied last year.
State-run University of the Philippines' rank fell from 63 to 78, while University of Santo Tomas ranked 101st, an advance from its former 144th spot.
De la Salle University suffered the worst blow among the four Philippine universities, falling from the 76th spot to land at 106th.
In measuring quality, QS used the following criteria: Asian academic peers (30 percent), papers per faculty (15 percent), citations per paper (15 percent), student-faculty ratio (20 percent), Asian employer review (10 percent), international faculty (2.5 percent), international students (2.5 percent), inbound exchange students (2.5 percent), and outbound exchange students (2.5 percent).
Rounding up the top 10 universities are the following:
1. University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong) 2. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Hong Kong) 3. National University of Singapore (Singapore) 4. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong) 5. The University of Tokyo (Japan) 6. Seoul National University (South Korea) 7. Osaka University (Japan) 8. Kyoto University (Japan) 9. Tohoku University (Japan) 10. Nagoya University (Japan)
The complete list is posted on QS' Asian University Rankings.
Japan had the most number of schools on the list at 56, followed by South Korea at 42, China at 40.
Some universities from the Philippines’ neighboring states like Malaysia, Indonesia , Taiwan, and Thailand ranked higher than the four Philippine schools which made it to the top 200.—JV, GMANews.TV

Moviegoer: Piolo, Charlene pose as models in UST’s Tetra Global quadricentennial sculpture By NESTOR CUARTERO June 6, 2010, 12:04pm
Every inch a Thomasian, Piolo Pascual and Charlene Gonzales posed as models recently for a life-size sculpture to rise in a strategic place within the University of Santo Tomas along España Boulevard in Manila in line with the university’s celebration of its quadricentennial.
The sculpture, called Tetra Global, is a creation by another Thomasian, multi-awarded artist Ramon Orlina, representing four different personality groups that make up the University. Piolo and Charlene, who attended UST as students in their youth, were picked to represent the face of the Thomasian studentry.
Two other images join them in the work of art, one representing the faculty, another standing in for the Dominican priests who founded and continue to run the school, which is celebrating its quadricentennial or 400th anniversary in 2011. UST was founded by the Dominican priest, Bishop Miguel de Benavides in 1611. The school is reputed to be older than Harvard University in the United States and is considered the oldest in this part of Asia.
Unveiling of the Tetra Global itself, says Giovanna Fontanilla, director of UST’s Public Affairs Office, will take place on Jan. 28, 2011 at the Quadricentennial Plaza behind the UST Main Building. The occasion formally kicks off UST’s year-long celebration of its 400 years, marked by concerts, art exhibits, lectures, fora, etc.
Piolo attended the university’s Faculty of Arts and Letters but failed to finish his degree when his family moved to the United States. Charlene graduated with a pre-Med degree in the College of Science.
Both were active in extra-curricular activities during their stay in UST. Piolo was a budding actor in Teatro Tomasino and Artistang Artlets while Charlene was a member of her college’s varsity volleyball team.
Piolo and Charlene’s joint effort to help their university celebrate a milestone came to mind recently as we met up with them on two separate occasions, both of them advertising-related.
On his launch as a Century Bangus endorser, Piolo said he was sorry he didn’t have time to finish college but made special mention of a teacher he admired dearly, Artlets Sociology professor Josephine Aguilar. Missed for sometime now on both the small and the big screens, Piolo is doing a teleserye next where he plays the policeman father of Santino star, Zaijan Jaranilla.
Charlene, on the other hand, is enjoying a temporary leave from showbiz to devote more time for her family. The former Bb. Pilipinas-Universe, speaking on behalf of her new endorsement, dietary supplement Cenovis, says she believes in the benefits of Omega-3 rich fish oil to the body. Cenovis is one of Australia’s top three dietary supplement brands.

Drumline contest up in UAAP By FRANCIS SANTIAGO May 9, 2010, 5:18pm
To spice up the coming 73rd UAAP season, school representatives of the country’s biggest collegiate league are planning to stage a Drumline competition in the second semester.
Ricky Palou, Ateneo’s representative to the board, said there is nothing final yet although the contest involving marching bands playing snare drums, tenor drums, bass drums and cymbals was discussed during their board meeting last week at Sofitel.
“Since we have the cheerdance competition in the first semester, maybe a similar tournament (drumline) is also good for the second semester,” said Palou, also the tournament director of the Shakey’s V-League.
According to wikipedia.org, Drumline, popularized by a movie based on true story, is usually incorporated into high school or college marching bands, drum and bugle corps or drum and lyre corps, indoor percussion ensembles and pipe bands which perform in football fields.Manila Bulletin

Tiger Pack pays tibute to Spikers By ANNE MARIE CARMELA L. DAYAUON
A DOUBLE conquest deserves a victory toast.
Acknowledging the victorious feats of the UST Spikers in both the UAAP and off-season games, the UST Tiger Pack hosted its third Tiger Pack Asalto last March 27 at the WokWith Me restaurant on Dapitan Street.
“It’s an appreciation for a job well done this year and we’re planning to do this every year,” said Dr. Francis Gloria, Tiger Pack organizer. “It’s our simple and humble way of giving back something to the school and to our players who devoted their time to play for the Thomasian community.”
Tiger Pack, a Thomasian alumni support group, paid tribute to the elite cast of individual awardees in both volleyball and beach volleyball wars. The awardees include Maruja Banaticla (Shakey’s V- League Most Valuable Player and Season 72 beach volleyball Rookie of the Year), Rhea Dimaculangan (Season 72 Best Server and Finals MVP, volleyball and Shakey’s V-League Season 6 First Conference Finals MVP), Aiza Maizo (Shakey’s V-League Season 6 First Conference Best Blocker; Shakey’s V- League Second Conference MVP and Finals MVP), Jayson Ramos (Season 72 beach volleyball MVP), Henry Pecaña (Season 72 Finals MVP) and Karl Dimaculangan (Season 72 Best Server).
The affair began with a surprise post-birthday treat for Season 72 Best Server and Finals MVP Rhea Dimaculangan who celebrated her birthday last March 21. The same goes for Tiger Spikers assistant coaches Odjie Mamon and Yani Fernandez who both celebrated theirs last March 28.
Winning coach Emil Lontoc and assistant coaches Benjamin Mape, Odjie Mamon and Yani Fernandez of the men’s volleyball team attended the victory dinner.
Lady Spikers’ head coach Shaq delos Santos also graced the event, together with assistant coach Vilet Ponce de Leon, members of the Tiger Pack and some students of the University.
Graduating players Angeli Tabaquero, Michelle del Rosario, Karl Dimaculangan, and Mark Dalit received special recognition, wrapped up by a message from their mentors De Los Santos and Lontoc.
Formed in 2006, Tiger Pack provides support for the UST teams and student athletes.
The group also helps boost the morale of the Thomasian crowd during games by providing paraphernalia such as yellow hotdog balloons and banners.
“I remain hopeful that more Thomasian alumni will help our student-athletes especially now that we’re celebrating our Quadricentennial.” said Gloria.Varsitarian

University of Santo Tomas 399th Anniversary April 27, 2010, 3:16pm
"Better to lose my empire,” King Philip II declared, “than lose a single soul to the devil.” Spreading the Christian faith was foremost in every royal instruction issued by the Spanish Crown to all expeditions and missions it sent abroad. Christianity is one of Spain’s enduring legacies to the Filipino people.
The Philippines became the only Catholic country in Asia because of this royal resolve to spread the faith and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) is one of the institutions that became the bulwark of Catholicism in the country. To this day, it continues to carry out the royal instruction.
Founded on April 28, 1611, by Archbishop Miguel de Benavidez, the University of Santo Tomas enjoys many distinctions. It is the oldest existing university in the Philippines and Asia and is one of the world’s largest Catholic universities in student population studying on one campus. It is the only Pontifical University in Asia. It is the only university, sectarian or non-sectarian, visited by two Popes – Pope Paul VI on November 28, 1970 and Pope John Paul II on February 18, 1981, and January 13, 1995. St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Catherine of Alexandria are its Patron and Patroness.
The University of Santo Tomas was first named Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santissimo Rosario. Later, it was renamed Colegio de Santo Tomas. Pope Innocent X elevated it to a university level on November 20, 1645. The University of Santo Tomas was given several distinguished titles. King Charles III bestowed on the university the title “Royal” in 1785, “Pontifical” by Pope Leo XIII in 1902, and “The Catholic University of the Philippines” by Pope Pius XII in 1947. The complete name of the University of Santo Tomas is “The Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomas, The Catholic University of the Philippines.”
From a few students in 1611, the University of Santo Tomas today has some 43,000 students enrolled in various degree programs offered by the university.
Saints, heroes, Philippine Presidents, Senators, Chief Justices of the Philippine Supreme Court, scientists, and other dignitaries are among its numerous illustrious alumni.
Growth continues to be a distinctive feature of the University of Santo Tomas demonstrating that this educational institution has remained relevant to the needs and demands of the times. Lately, it has established campuses in Santa Rosa City in Laguna, General Santos City in Mindanao, and Negombo in Sri Lanka.
The University of Santo Tomas will be celebrating its 400th Founding Anniversary in A.D. 2011.
We congratulate the University of Santo Tomas headed by its Rector, Rev. Fr. Rolando V. de la Rosa, OP, its Board of Regents, Officials, Deans, Faculty Personnel, Students, and Alumni, on the occasion of its 399th Founding Anniversary and wish them success in all their endeavors. Mabuhay!

Malapit na ang playoffs.... kaya eto ang preview of the match-ups... nasa East ang top 2 teams with the best record samantalang lahat ng Western qualifiers ay may 50 wins...Previews of the 8 first-round NBA playoff series April 16, 2010, 3:55pm A look at the eight first-round series in the NBA playoffs, which start this weekend (AP): ___ EASTERN CONFERENCENo. 1 CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (61-21) vs. No. 8 CHICAGO BULLS (41-41).Season series: Tied, 2-2. The Bulls won at Cleveland in November during the Cavaliers' 3-3 start, then pulled out a 109-108 home victory on April 8 when LeBron James was resting. The Cavs limited the Bulls to an average of 86 points in winning the other two meetings, though Chicago was without Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah and Luol Deng in one of them. Storyline: The loaded Cavaliers begin the chase for a first NBA championship, hoping not to have any early rust after sitting James for the final four games of the regular season and choosing not to bring Shaquille O'Neal back from his February thumb injury. Chicago won its final three games to grab the last spot and was a dangerous underdog last year, pushing Boston to seven games in a thrilling first-round series. Key Matchup I: Mo Williams vs. Rose. Rose, last season's Rookie of the Year, was at his best down the stretch after finally shaking some frustrating injuries earlier in the season. Williams scored 35 points in the last meeting and made 18-of-34 shots over the last two. However, he was just 9 of 26 in the first two matchups, the kind of ugly shooting that will remind Cavs fans of his struggles late in last year's postseason. Key Matchup II: Antawn Jamison vs. Taj Gibson. Jamison is supposed to be the final piece of the Cavs' championship puzzle, and he scored 23 points in the final game against the Bulls. Gibson had a pair of double-doubles against the Cavs, including a 20-point, 13-rebound performance, and Chicago needs his toughness against Cleveland's big frontcourt. X-Factor: Noah. Terrific finishing stretch included 17 points and 15 rebounds in Bulls' home victory over the Cavs. He wasn't nearly as effective in his other two games against Cleveland, and he'll have to overcome a weight disadvantage inside against the likes of O'Neal and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Prediction: Cavaliers in 5. Cavs ito pero tingin ko baka umabot ng 6...No. 2 ORLANDO MAGIC (59-23) vs. No. 7 CHARLOTTE BOBCATS (44-38).Season series: Magic, 3-1. Orlando won the first three meetings before the Bobcats snapped the Magic's eight-game winning streak with a 96-89 victory on March 14 in Orlando. Two of the Magic's wins came way back in November, the second on the night Stephen Jackson made his debut with Charlotte on Nov. 16. Storyline: The Magic's quest to return to the NBA finals starts against a postseason newcomer. Charlotte is making the first playoff appearance in the franchise's six-year history. Key matchup I: Vince Carter vs. Jackson. Carter rebounded from a brutal stretch in January to play well in the second half, providing some of the explosiveness the Magic lacked last year in their finals loss. The tough and always-confident Jackson has made a huge difference since his arrival in Charlotte and has tons of postseason experience, which the Bobcats severely lack. Key matchup II: Rashard Lewis vs. Gerald Wallace. Perhaps while adjusting to Carter's arrival, Lewis hasn't played as well as he did last year, but now is when it really matters. He can start by playing better than he did while averaging just 10.3 points and making only 5-of-25 3-pointers in three games against the Bobcats. Like Lewis, Wallace causes matchup problems at the 4-spot and made his first All-Star game. He averaged 11 points and 9.3 boards against Orlando, but probably has to be more effective offensively after making only nine field goals in three games. X-factor: Tyson Chandler. Another injury-plagued season for the center ended with him leaving the Bobcats' finale with hip and left elbow injuries. Charlotte could use him on the floor to help defend Dwight Howard. Prediction: Magic in 6. No. 3 ATLANTA HAWKS (53-29) vs. No. 6 MILWAUKEE BUCKS (46-36). Season series: Hawks, 2-1. All three games were close, with Atlanta's 104-96 victory on Monday the largest margin of victory in the series. Al Horford had double-doubles in all three games and could put up even bigger numbers without Andrew Bogut to help defend him. John Salmons averaged 30.7 points for Milwaukee. Brandon Jennings shot just 10 of 36 (28 percent). Storyline: The Hawks reached the second round last year and are hoping they're ready to go even further this time. Their road may have gotten easier when the Bucks, no longer considered as dangerous an underdog since Bogut's season-ending injuries, fell to the No. 6 seed. Key matchup I: Joe Johnson vs. Salmons. If they can duplicate their duels from the regular season, this will be an entertaining series. Salmons outscored the All-Star guard 32-24 in the first meeting and 32-27 in the second, before Johnson went for 31 to Salmons' 28 in the last game. Key matchup II: Jamal Crawford vs. Jerry Stackhouse. A couple of veteran guards who can get hot in a hurry from the outside off the bench. Plenty of eyes will be on Crawford to see how the leading candidate for the sixth man award will fare in his first postseason action. X-factor: Ersan Ilyasova. With Bogut out, Ilyasova could see heavy minutes off the bench, including some at center, where the 6-foot-9 Turkey native would have to match up with the likes of Horford and Josh Smith. Prediction: Hawks in 6. No. 4 BOSTON CELTICS (50-32) vs. No. 5 MIAMI HEAT (47-35).Season series: Celtics, 3-0. Boston has won 11 of the last 12 meetings, winning the three games this season by seven, six and five points. The Celtics' sweep this season came despite missing Kevin Garnett in one game and Paul Pierce in another. Dwyane Wade had a 44-point game in an overtime loss and averaged 33.7, while Rajon Rondo averaged 20 points and 11 assists. Storyline: The Celtics, despite a poor finish and an underachieving second half of the season, insist they can still be title threats because their Big Three of Garnett, Pierce and Ray Allen is healthy. However, the Heat played far better down the stretch, and Wade gives them a chance at the upset here. Key matchup I: Allen vs. Wade. One of the NBA's best jump shots wasn't falling as much this season, as Allen's average of 16.3 points was the lowest since his rookie season of 1996-97. But if he's on in the playoffs, it will force Wade to work defending either he or Rondo, and that could affect him on the other end. Key matchup II: Kendrick Perkins vs. Jermaine O'Neal. O'Neal said a late-season ankle injury wouldn't be a problem. The Heat have to hope he's right because they don't have many good options at center against Perkins, who had a pair of double-doubles against Miami. X-factor: Nate Robinson. That's what Boston coach Doc Rivers has said, saying the trade for the former Knicks guard who will be making his postseason debut will have been worth it if Robinson comes off the bench and wins a game for the Celtics. Prediction: Celtics in 7. WESTERN CONFERENCENo. 1 LOS ANGELES LAKERS (57-25) vs. No. 8 OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER (50-32).Season series: Lakers, 3-1. Los Angeles won the first three meetings before the Thunder's 91-75 home victory on March 26 that snapped their 12-game losing streak in the series. Kobe Bryant averaged 32.3 points in the first three meetings, then was held to 11 on 4-of-11 shooting while committing nine turnovers in the finale. Kevin Durant scored 25.8 per game for Oklahoma City. Storyline: After stumbling a bit late in the season while dealing with some injuries, the defending champion Lakers try to put everything together for a run toward a third straight NBA finals appearance. The Thunder were one of the league's biggest surprises and earned their first postseason berth since moving from Seattle. Durant led the NBA with 30.1 points per game and Bryant was fourth at 27.0 Key matchup I: Ron Artest vs. Durant. Artest was largely a disappointment during the regular season, but his true value won't really be measured until he has defended some of the high-scoring forwards the Lakers could face. First up is the 21-year-old Durant, the league's youngest scoring champion ever. Key matchup II: Bryant vs. Thabo Sefolosha. Sefolosha isn't much of a scorer, but is a very good defensive guard. With Bryant struggling with his shot while dealing with a broken index finger on his right hand, the Thunder have hopes of somewhat containing last season's NBA finals MVP. X-factor: Andrew Bynum. Bynum averaged 19.3 points on 63 percent shooting in the first three meetings. He'll likely be rusty, but if he plays anywhere near the way he did against the Thunder in the regular season, there's nobody on the other side who can defend him. Prediction: Lakers in 5. Go Lakers! No. 2 DALLAS MAVERICKS (55-27) vs. No. 7 SAN ANTONIO SPURS (50-32).Season series: Mavericks, 3-1. Little can be determined from this year's series, because the teams have never really seen each other at full strength. The first three meetings came before the Mavericks acquired Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood in February, and the last one came on the final night of the season, when the Spurs rested Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili. Dallas won that game to set up this series. Storyline: Second straight playoff meeting and third in five years for the division rivals from Texas. The Mavericks won both of them, taking a thrilling seven-game series in 2006 on their way to the NBA finals, then knocking off an injury-weakened San Antonio team last year. Key matchup I: Dirk Nowitzki vs. Tim Duncan. Neither team had any success stopping the All-Star forwards during the regular season. Duncan averaged 26.5 points and 13 rebounds in two games, while Nowitzki had a 41-point night among his 28.8 points per game. Key matchup II: Butler vs. Ginobili. Ginobili, who missed last year's series because of injury, carried the Spurs late in the season by playing sensational basketball after moving into the lineup when Parker was injured. Butler, a natural small forward serving as a big guard since his move to Dallas, could present matchup problems because of his size and strength. X-factor: Richard Jefferson. He didn't play nearly as well as the Spurs would have hoped after acquiring him last summer, but he had some good nights against the Mavs. He had a 29-point game and was in double figures in two other meetings. San Antonio needs him to play that well here against a more athletic team. Prediction: Spurs in 7. No. 3 PHOENIX SUNS (54-28) vs. No. 6 PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS (50-32).Season series: Trail Blazers, 2-1. Portland averaged 106.5 points while winning the first two meetings before the Suns showed their defensive improvement in a 93-87 victory on March 21. None of the games was decided by more than seven points. Storyline: Strong bounce-back season for the Suns after missing the playoffs last year landed them the No. 3 seed. Phoenix was 23-6 since the All-Star break and gets a Portland team that will be without its best player. Brandon Roy has a torn meniscus in his knee that will require surgery. He is scheduled to have surgery on Friday. Key matchup I: Amare Stoudemire vs. LaMarcus Aldridge. Stoudemire averaged 23 points and 11.3 rebounds against Portland and may have been the league's dominant power forward down the stretch. Aldridge isn't too far behind, but he'll have to be even better as Portland's No. 1 option since Roy can't go. Key matchup II: Steve Nash vs. Andre Miller. Nash still might be the NBA's best point guard at playing fast, but Miller likes to push the tempo, too. He averaged 21 points in the last two meetings, while Nash had a pair of double-doubles against Portland. X-factor: Rudy Fernandez. Portland will need everyone to step up since Roy is unavailable, and the flashy Fernandez would love to be the guy. He proved he can play in big-time games when he scored 22 points against the United States in the 2008 Olympics gold-medal game. Prediction: Suns in 6. No. 4 DENVER NUGGETS (53-29) vs. No. 5 UTAH JAZZ (53-29).Season series: Nuggets, 3-1. Denver earned the tiebreaker and home-court advantage in this series by winning the first three meetings to clinch the season series. The Jazz may come to regret a 105-95 home loss on Jan. 2, a game in which neither Chauncey Billups nor Carmelo Anthony played. Utah won the other game both missed, but the two All-Stars were unstoppable when they did play, with Anthony averaging 33.5 points and Billups 27. Storyline: In the balanced Western Conference, either of these teams is capable of knocking off the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers in the second round. However, one of them won't even get past their opening series. Denver hopes to get coach George Karl back from his cancer treatments if it advances. Key Matchup I: Billups vs. Deron Williams. Williams had three 20-point games, but his size and physical play doesn't bother Billups the way it does many other point guards. And Billups, a former NBA finals MVP, is one of the league's most clutch postseason performers. Key Matchup II: Kenyon Martin vs. Carlos Boozer. If both are healthy — both were on the bench with injuries when their seasons ended — this is a good matchup of rugged power forwards. Boozer had double-doubles in all four games but Martin was nearly as sharp, collecting three double-doubles. X-Factor: Nene. Had only four points in the final meeting, but before that hurt Utah with some surprising offense. He averaged 18.7 points in the three victories. Prediction: Nuggets in 7. Akala ko no.2 ang Nuggets...Bulletin
