Paskuhan 2013 draws crowd of 60,000
21 December 2013, 4:08 p.m. - THE SUDDEN downpour did not dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd in this year's Paskuhan, which was celebrated for a cause Friday evening.
According to the UST Security Office, an estimated 60,000 Thomasians and outsiders gathered at the UST Grandstand and Open Field for the annual festivities.
The celebration started with the traditional “Panunuluyan,” a re-enactment of the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph's search for a place for the Blessed Mother to give birth to the Savior. It was followed by the Paskuhan Mass presided by Rector Fr. Herminio Dagohoy, O.P.
In his homily, Dagohoy told Thomasians to keep in mind the victims of Super Typhoon "Yolanda" in the Visayas. Paskuhan is a reminder of how God visited mankind by becoming man himself, he said.
"Ang Paskuhan na ito ay iniiaalay natin sa mga nasalanta ng bagyo... Ang Paskuhan natin sa araw na ito ay magiging kakaiba," Dagohoy said.
Mass offerings were donated to "Yolanda" victims, as part of the ceremonial send-off of donations to the affected areas.
The annual agape was held beside the Main Building, where Thomasians were treated to popcorn, barbecue, puto bumbong and bibingka.
The Panunuluyan, the Mass and the agape were held on the same day this year, unlike previous Paskuhan celebrations wherein the festivities were held on separate days.
There was no fireworks display this year.
Contrary to previous reports of University-based bands headlining the concert, famous bands and music personalities such as Parokya ni Edgar, Rico Blanco, Joyce Pring, Paraluman, Mayonnaise, and Never the Strangers performed for the crowd.
Old-timers like Paraluman said they still found themselves nervous as they faced the welcoming Thomasian crowd.
“Sobra naming pinaghahandaan kapag Paskuhan. Hanggang ngayon, sobrang mainit pa rin ang pag-welcome sa amin kahit na taun-taon nandito kami,” said Madz Ramboyong, Paraluman vocalist and College of Fine Arts and Design alumna.
The Security Office again implemented the “buddy system,” wherein an outsider must be accompanied by a Thomasian.
Security Office chief Joseph Badinas said stricter inspections were conducted on those who entered the Sampaloc campus. John Joseph G. Basijan

UST declines in electronics eng'g board exams
19 December 2013, 6:54 p.m. - THE UNIVERSITY slid in the recent licensure exams for electronics engineers, but three Thomasians broke into the top 10 list of passers.
UST's passing rate dipped to 55.86 percent from last year's 62.73 percent. Eighty-one out of 145 Thomasian examinees passed the test, results from the Professional Regulation Commission showed.
Leading the new batch of Thomasian electronics engineers is second-placer Kevin Tolentino (87.80 percent). Thomasians Joseph Christian Agreda and Neil Ross Vera were tied at ninth place after posting identical scores of 85.90 percent.
Jan Paolo Go of De La Salle University-Dasmarinas led this year's topnotchers with a grade of 88.9 percent.
The University of the Philippines-Diliman was named the only top-performing school for this year after getting a 96.67-percent passing rate, or 29 passers out of 30 examinees. PRC requires an 80-percent passing rate with 30 or more examinees to be declared a top-performing school.
The national passing rate plunged to 34.51-percent from last year’s 51.57 percent. Out of the 4, 947 who took the exam, only 1, 707 students passed. Jon Christoffer R. Obice

12-story Alumni Center to finally open next year
FOLLOWING changes in plans, the opening of the Thomasian Alumni Center has been moved to next school year.
“The target is for the building to be completed by September or December [2014],” said Architecture Dean John Joseph Fernandez, project head, in an interview.
The Thomasian Alumni Center will be officially called Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building in honor of the former UST professor and Dominican Master General martyred in 1936 during the religious persecution in Spain. The building is expected to be the biggest of its kind among alumni centers in the country.
Fides Ma. Lourdes Carlos, acting director of the Office for Alumni Relations (OAR), said the building would be a “home away from home” for Thomasian alumni.
In an article published by the Varsitarian in 2012 for the University’s Neo-Centennial celebration, officials said the lobby of the building was expected to be finished last year.
However, Carlos said a lot of factors, like the occurrence of natural calamities, resulted in delays.
Fernandez also said there were changes in the number of floors. “[The lobby] should have been functioning [since] January 2012.
"Originally dapat five-story lang ‘yan, naging six, tapos naging twelve. Nag-iba ang timetable,” he said.
Carlos and Fernandez said interior finishing and fitting began last September, covering the first to third floors.
Preserving the old facade
The Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building sits on the site of the old University gymnasium. To preserve its historical value, the facade of the old gymnasium will be retained.
The grand lobby will be used for homecomings and other alumni activities. Donors’ names will be inscribed on the walls of the ground floor.
The building was funded by donations from alumni benefactors and the US-based UST Medical Alumni Association Foundation. The foundation pledged $1 million for the construction, which started in 2010.
The two spiral staircases of the old gymnasium will be retained to connect to the mezzanine level.
Ballrooms and function rooms with a pre-function area for cocktails will be on the second floor. The third floor will house alumni offices including the OAR, the UST Alumni Association, Inc., the Golden Cross and Saber, and the Thomasian Alumni Leaders Association.
Multipurpose rooms will be on the fourth floor while the next floor will have lodging facilities for alumni visitors and University guests. This will also serve as a training venue for Tourism and Hospitality Management students.
Fernandez said the sixth to twelfth floors will supplement the University’s classroom requirements, operating on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Any college that will be needing additional rooms will be accommodated. Pero ‘di siya dedicated sa isang specific college. Kumbaga, first come, first served,” he said.
Fernandez said that by January 2014, the grand lobby and the ballroom on the second floor would be ready for the annual alumni homecoming. “While this is happening, the rest of the building will of course continue with the construction,” he added.
Abelardo Tolentino, chief executive officer of the Aidea Architectural Firm, which sponsored the design competition for the alumni center, was the original architect of the project. He designed the first to fifth floors before handing the task over to Fernandez, who designed the sixth to twelfth floors.
Thomasian architecture graduates Christian Darby Santos, Weinard Tan, and Jesi Ling made the original design of the structure. Fernandez said he and Tolentino made the working drawings for the project without deviating from the conceptual drawings of the architecture graduates. Jon Christoffer R. Obice

UST Quadricentennial Pavilion main courtThomasian athletes find new lair By Ralph Joshua D.R. Hernandez
ASIDE from the Quadricentennial Pavilion, a new lair will soon be available for Thomasian athletes.
Temporarily known as the “Practice court with Mezzanine,” the new three-story building just beside the state-of-the-art Quadricentennial Pavilion will house facilities that could better cater to the needs of Thomasian athletes.
Fr. Roberto Pinto, O.P., director of the Facilities Management Office, said the construction of the arena was intended mainly to “utilize” the available space.
“We wanted to utilize the space through elevation rather than put up just three covered courts, which was the original plan,” he said.
The structure’s blueprint shows the variety of courts that could back the services of the Quadricentennial Pavilion, which is used in various events aside athletic purposes such as graduation rites and conferences.
“There will be three courts on the ground floor: a covered basketball court, which is already there; a volleyball court will be built on the side near the Roque Ruaño building and badminton and sepak takraw courts will be in the middle of the basketball and volleyball courts,” architect Eric Sta. Maria said.
“On the second floor, there will be tennis and basketball courts and an open basketball court on the third and last floor.”
Unlike the larger Quadricentennial Pavilion, the practice court, which is expected to be finished by January next year, will not house commercial establishments.
“Its purpose will be entirely for sports,” Pinto said.
After years of training in the seminary’s tennis courts, the UST Tennisters are delighted with the construction of their eventual home.
“We’re really happy to have our own practice court,” coach Dennis Sta. Cruz said. “We’re also thankful to UST because it is giving importance to other [sporting] events.”
The tennis squads are recuperating from their runner-up finishes both in the men’s and women’s divisions last season.
The UST Shuttlers, meanwhile, will stay and still conduct training at the Quadricentennial Pavilion.
