Source: www.ust.edu.phMasayang Paskuhan sa ating lahat!UST Christmas concert raises funds for art restoration By Rowena C. Burgos Philippine Daily Inquirer
Annual classical concert will further raise money to restore the UST Museum’s priceless art collection while kicking off the celebration for UST’s 400th anniversary in 2011 as Asia’s oldest university THE UNIVERSITY OF SANTO Tomas (UST) Museum of Arts and Sciences is the country’s oldest museum, and its priceless visual arts collection contains not only Spanish colonial works but also Modernist pieces, considering that the UST school of Fine Arts is the birthplace of modernism in the Philippines. But the renovation of the museum and the restoration, cleaning and maintenance of its artworks only began in earnest in the 1990s.
Restoring one painting alone costs at least P300,000 that the income from the university’s laboratory for painting restoration and snack nook in the Main Building is not enough.
So Andrew Gan, Jonathan Matti and Greg Jarencio joined forces with art patroness Maricris Zobel to make the annual UST Christmas Concert Gala a fundraising project for the museum.
Last year, the concert raised funds for the restoration. This year, the seventh UST Christmas Concert Gala, which is on Dec. 3, Thursday, 7 p.m. at the UST Chapel, will raise more funds for the project.
“Despite the economic situation, we hope to double the amount of the funds raised last year,” says Fr. Isidro Abaño, UST Museum director and UST assistant to the Rector for quadricentennial activities and highlights. Abaño and Zobel are co-chairpersons of the concert.
The Christmas concert will feature Thomasian talents like the internationally famous UST Singers, premiere soprano Rachelle Gerodias, tenor Abdul Candao, UST Symphony Orchestra conductor Herminigildo Ranera, USTeMUNDO Ethnic Group, UST Jazz Ensemble and the Tiples de Santo Domingo Boys Choir.
Donations from the Christmas concert gala will be used to bankroll the UST’s heritage conservation efforts, which will focus on the restoration of paintings, and the cleaning and maintenance of sculptures of the UST Museum.
The recently restored oils on canvas are Romualdo Locatelli’s “Young Balinese Girl,” Ricarte Purugganan’s portrait of Fr. Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, OP, Juan Arzeo’s portraits of San Vicente Ferrer and Fr. Juan Antonio Zulaybar, OP, Severino Fabie’s portrait of Dr. Jose Rizal and Nuestra Señora del Rosario. Undergoing restoration are Dante Fabie’s “Our Lady of Naval,” “El Amor Misere Cordioso,” portrait of Bishop Domingo Salazar, OP, and Benavides’ “Foundation of UST.”
Another beneficiary of the concert is the scholarship program for students of the UST Conservatory of Music. Part of this year’s concert proceeds will go to the victims of Tropical Storm “Ondoy” and Typhoon “Pepeng.”
Piolo Pascual sculpture
“The concert is just a prologue to the quadricentennial celebration in 2011,” Abaño says. In 2011, UST marks its 400th anniversary as Asia’s oldest university.
On Dec. 10, the grand finals for the quadricentennial songwriting competition will be held, while the quadricentennial countdown will begin on Dec. 18 during the traditional UST Paskuhan with the launch of 400 Days to 400th Year.
In 2011, there will be a parade, grand Mass, alumni homecoming, lectures, launch of UST housing project for poor families, opening of a museum gallery and unveiling of Ramon Orlina’s bronze-and-glass monument called Tetra Global, representing the university’s 400 years of existence. “Charlene Gonzales and Piolo Pascual, who are UST alumni, modeled for this artwork,” Abaño says.
Museum renovation
It was in 1992 when Abaño was appointed director of the museum. He studied “Conservation and Cultural Heritage of the Church with the Jesuits in Rome,” the Dominican priest said with a laugh. “I was very fortunate for our professor then was the director of the Vatican Museum. I had access to the Vatican lab and archives.”
Renovation of the UST Museum started in 1997, beginning with Abaño’s office (where students used to hang out) which had a leaking roof. The main hall was renovated to accommodate different exhibitions.
Abaño then put up the laboratory for conservation. “My happiest moment would be when a Filipino is able to develop our very own materials for artwork conservation so we don’t have to import. Ang mahal din kasi.”
The Center for Heritage and Cultural Studies at the Graduate School, on the other hand, does studies on cultural mapping, which become master plans for tourism of major provinces and cities. The center is headed by Eric Zerrudo, director of the UST Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics and the Metropolitan Museum.
Abaño plans to build a gallery for the other artworks at the UST Main Building and the award-winning creations of UST Architecture and Fine Arts students that are neatly stored in huge cabinets.
The UST Museum has specimens of natural history, coins, medals and memorabilia, ethnographic materials, Oriental Arts objects, and Philippine religious images and paintings. The extensive collection has been built over the years by the powerful and influential Dominicans, a religious institute of leading theologians and scholars.
Abaño, together with Ma. Zita Oebanda, UST Museum collection management and documentation assistant, also started the detailed documentation of the museum’s 913 artworks and their condition reports for conservation.
Some of the priceless paintings include Fernando Amorsolo’s work on bayanihan and Juan Luna’s "Portrait of a Soldier." “Either one of these paintings can buy a house and lot in Ayala Alabang,” Abaño says.
The newest paintings are displayed in the administrative offices of different colleges.
“In my concept, heritage is very important to UST, being a 400-year-old university,” Abano said. “When you speak of heritage, it belongs to everybody; it doesn’t belong to an individual person, so it’s a social responsibility. And that’s part of my mission, to make sure these things are preserved.”
Abaño added that people without sense of heritage are like people with no roots. “If you don’t have heritage, you don’t have roots, you have no sense of pride,” he says. “In a country where the sense of heritage is strong, the sense of pride is also high.”

The organizers were led by the publisher of the trendy Rouge Magazine, woman of substance and stature Maricris Zobel, and so-likeable Fr. Isidro Abaño, OP. The event kicked off the Christmas season in Cosmo Manille. And before you could even bat an eyelash, all roads led to the University of Santo Tomas, which is the Philippines and Asia’s oldest university at nearly 400 years old. The hard-working and dedicated co-chairs and executive committee members, which included interesting, in-demand interior designer Jonathan Matti and renowned brilliant banker Andrew Gan, welcomed the chic invitees of the alta sociedad, heavyweight businessmen and loads of CEOs of different conglomerates, palanggas. Things got on a roll with the lighting of the UST Christmas tree and campus led by mega sponsors Vicki Belo and Cristalle Henares of Belo Medical Group, and Andrew Budiman, the handsome, boyish, cyber-smart GM of Singapore Airlines, along with Mayor Alfredo Lim and Fr. Didoy Abaño, no less. It was an awesome magical sight. Next was at the UST Chapel (Santissimo Rosario Parish Church) for the grand Christmas concert. Tons of our town’s namedroppables braved the horrendous traffic to make it in time for this magnificent concert, headed by sponsor, business magnate and international polo player Iñigo Zobel, dahlings. The nice thing about this concert is that all the performers are students, faculty and alumni of UST. Wow! Superb performances include Abdul Candao and Andrew Fernando, UST alumni who have become stars in the opera scene overseas, and the incredibly divine diva Rachelle Gerodias. And all the other soloists, UST Singers, UST Orchestra and the angelic voices of the Tiples de Santo Domingo (the boys’ choir of Santo Domingo Church) were just a knockout. At the end of the mind-boggling event, everyone applauded and shouted “Bravo! Bravo!” Then the invitees were asked to sing along to “Silent Night” and “Ang Pasko ay Sumapit”—songs personally chosen by UST’s Rector Magnificus, Fr. Rolando de la Rosa, OP, along with Dean Raul Sunico and Father Didoy. The wonderful part is the proceeds go to scholarships of the Conservatory of Music. Such fantastic talents that all of us Filipinos should be proud of. (Tonight, during UST’s traditional Paskuhan at the magnificent UST Plaza Mayor, Father De la Rosa will officially start the countdown to the UST Quadricentennial in 2011. UST alumni Miriam Quiambao and Kim Atienza will emcee the concert, which will be capped off by a grand fireworks display. Be there!) CocktailsAfter the concert, we were ushered to the UST Museum for the cocktail reception, since 2/3 of the funds raised by the gala go to the heritage-conservation efforts of the university. Maricris Zobel and Father Didoy felt it was important that guests see where their money is going. The university does not normally open its doors to public functions so thank goodness they were able to persuade Father De la Rosa to agree. A rare treat indeed for us, palanggas. The museum and main building were gorgeously eye-catching, and lit by committee member Jonathan Matti together with Robert Blancaflor who really outdid themselves. The food was from the popular La Tasca with champagne flowing endlessly. It was such a thrill that the committee put up some of the paintings which have been restored since the last gala due to the committee’s efforts. In particular, I thought the “Portrait of a Balinese Girl” by Locatelli was truly a masterpiece. The organizers told me “guests were even more generous this year so they hope they can do even more next year,” dahlings. Major corporate sponsors like San Miguel Corp., Belo Essentials, E. Zobel Inc., Singapore Airlines, Security Bank, Ayala Corp., Kenny Rogers, Seattle’s Best, Jag Jeans, Globe Asiatique, LGT Bank in Liechtenstein, Goldilocks, Afficionado, Century Pacific Group, Kenneth and Mock, Globe Telecommunications, Asia Brewery, Metrobank, Emphasis, Oishi, Divina & Uy Law Offices, Larry’s Curtains and the many, many individual sponsors really deserve to take a bow for supporting this super-worthy enterprise. Dancing followed at the lobby of the main building with music provided by MOBB. A totally awesome evening and congratulations should go to the Christmas Concert Gala 2009 board and the hardworking Christmas Gala and Quadricentennial team of UST: vivacious Giovanna Fontanilla, Greg Jarencio, Michaela Lagniton and Jonathan Gamalinda. Well, as we all know, UST is a Pontifical and Royal University and a little birdie whispered to me that next year, the organizers have already invited the king and queen of Spain, no less. Inquirer

Paskuhan draws crowd of 50,000THE COUNTDOWN to UST’s 400th year officially begun December 18, with the annual Paskuhan program launching four "quadricentennial symbols" before a record crowd of Thomasians and outsiders that flocked to the Pontifical and the Royal University’s “most memorable” Christmas celebration. With the theme “4 horas, 4 dias, 400 days, 400 taon,” which represented the three cultures — Spanish, American, and Filipino — that defined UST's history, the four-hour Paskuhan started with a parade of costumes from the Spanish colonial era to the 21st century. The recitation of the quadricentennial prayer by Fr. Pompeyo de Mesa, O.P. over a candle-lighting ceremony followed, along with the lighting of the 80-foot Christmas tree and the UST grounds. The raising of the quadricentennial flag embroidered with “2011,” and featuring the sun and the colors “yellow” and “blue” taken from the UST logo, coincided with an exhibition at the Main Building, drum rolls from the Yellow Jackets, and a dance number from the Salinggawi Dance Troupe. Rector Fr. Rolando de la Rosa, O.P. gave a message to the more than 50,000 people gathered at the UST open field. “Tonight, we are not just Thomasians. We are the University of Santo Tomas,” the Rector said. A star-studded program followed, with beauty queen and UST alumna Miriam Quiambao as host and actor JC Cuadrado in-charge of the annual Paskuhan raffle, which gave away prizes such as net books and gift certificates worth P5,000. Quiambao was later joined by Matanglawin host and USTv award winner Kim Atienza, a College of Education alumnus. Thomasian entertainers graced the show -- singer Jamie Rivera (College of Commerce), comedienne Beverly Salvejo (Science), former Pinoy Dream Academy "scholar" RJ Jimenez (Engineering), internationally acclaimed singers Isay Alvarez (Arts and Letters) and Robert Seña (Fine Arts), actor Polo Ravales (Education), and dancer Archie Alemania (Arts and Letters). Bands Sandwich and 6CycleMind, both managed by a Thomasian, also performed. Before the clock ticked 12 midnight, the quadricentennial song “Ako’y Isang Tomasino” by Gerardo de Leon and arranged by award-winning composer and UST alumnus Jimmy Antiporda (both from Engineering), was sung by Thomasian singers Apple Chiu and Aicelle Santos, with Rhap Salazar and the UST Singers. The UST Symphony Orchestra provided music throughout the program. The countdown began with the unveiling of the quadricentennial countdown clock by Swatch, a Swiss watch company, and designed by former Varsitarian art director Jonathan Gamalinda, followed by a fireworks display. During the program, messages of congratulations from local celebrities were also shown. The Central Student Council moved around with stamps and stamp pads, marking every Thomasian with the message “countdown, count me in.” “This year’s Paskuhan is more lively and the most colorful, not to mention, the most memorable,” said Reina Serador of the public affairs office, an Artlets alumna. The Paskuhan festivities started last December 15 with the Paskuhan Mass and salu-salo. It also marked the first simbang gabi mass, celebrated by the Rector. The Mass also featured the traditional Panunuluyan, a re-enactment of the quest of Joseph and Mary to find an inn where Mary could give birth to the Messiah. “The greatest miracle is the coming of Jesus Christ as a human,” said De la Rosa in his homily. Classical Christmas concert pays tribute to UST heritageCountdown to UST’s 400th anniversary in 2011 to start on Dec. 18THE ANNUAL CLASSICAL CHRISTMAS Concert of the University of Santo Tomas on Dec. 3 made a grand toast to the multifaceted heritage of the Pontifical University. Now on its second year of raising funds for the restoration of the art collection of UST, the concert, attended by some of Manila high-society figures, was held to drumbeat UST’s forthcoming celebrations as it turns 400 in 2011 as Asia’s oldest university. Meanwhile, UST will start its official countdown to its 400th anniversary in 2011 on Dec. 18 during the traditional Paskuhan at the UST Grandstand. Theme of the event is “400 Years of Unending Grace.” To lead the countdown is UST Rector Magnificus and former Commission on Higher Education chair Fr. Rolando V. de la Rosa, OP. During the Christmas concert at the UST Santissimo Rosario Parish Church, the audience was led by Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams, Papal Nuncio to the Philippines, and Italian Ambassador Rubens Anna Fedele. Internationally renownedLeading this year’s performers were tenor Abdul Candao, a former faculty member of the UST Conservatory of Music and now a voice professor at the Vienna Conservatory of Music; the UST Singers; and the UST Symphony Orchestra under Hermegildo Ranera Soprano Rachelle Gerodias, tenor Lemuel de la Cruz and baritone Andrew Fernando also performed. Sounds of a crowing rooster and ringing church bells, reminiscent of the traditional midnight Mass, helped set the mood for the event. Coro Tomasino, Liturgikon Vocal Ensemble, UST Singers and Tiples de Santo Domingo under Eugene Santos opened the show with a medley of Filipino Christmas songs: “Pasko Na Naman,” “Simbang Gabi,” “Noche Buena,” “Sa Paskong Darating.” They were accompanied by the USTeMun do ethnic ensemble. Lemuel de la Cruz performed with the Tiples, the country’s oldest boys’ choir, Franz Schuber’s “Mile Cherubini in Coro” (A Thousand Cherubs in a Choir). De la Cruz then teamed up with a member of the choir to sing the traditional song “Good King Wenceslas.” Conservatory of Music senior Ferleoni Medina and tenor Vincent Evangelista performed “Ave Maria” from “A Winter Symphony.” Voice majors Marie Ann Dominese and Christian Paul Anthony Naga rendered “As Long as There’s Christmas.” Toots Tolentino led the UST Jazz Ensemble in a jamming session of a Christmas medley. Abdul Candao made a powerful rendition of George Bizet’s “Agnus Dei.” The UST Singers, under Fidel Calalang, took the spotlight and performed “Alles was Odem Nat Lobet dem Hern,” “Ave Maria,” “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” and “Munting Sangol.” Andrew Fernando gripped the audience next with his mighty rendition of “What Child Is This?” He was later joined by De la Cruz and Gerodias in the moving number “Tecum Principum.” Gerodias, the country’s top soprano, as always shone. With the Liturgikon Vocal Ensemble and Coro Tomasino, she performed “Alleluia” and “The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy.” For the finale, all the performers sang a Christmas medley and enjoined the audience to sing along with them “Silent Night” and “Ang Pasko ay Sumapit.” Cocktails were served at the UST Museum of Arts and Sciences, where guests were treated to the newly restored paintings from the UST collection, such as Severino Fabie’s portrait of José Rizal, as well as his murals, “Santissimo Rosario” and “The Crucifixion.” Part of the donations would also be used to fund scholarships in the UST Conservatory, the country’s biggest music school. Maricris Zobel, co-chair of the concert’s organizing committee with UST Museum director Fr. Isidro Abaño, OP, said the concert sought to pay tribute to UST as a legacy to the Filipino people. “The concert’s role is to gather funds [for the restoration of the UST collection] because I believe the University of Santo Tomas is our heritage, a treasure that we need to preserve,” Zobel said. Countdown to 2011The Dec. 18 Paskuhan will officially start the countdown to 2011 and kick off the celebration of the UST Quadricentennial, Fr. De la Rosa said. Miriam Quiambao, Kim Atienza and JC Cuadrado will emcee the Paskuhan. Among the several grand events to mark the UST quadricentennial are “Lumina Pandit: An Exhibition of Historical Treasures,” an international exhibit to feature the collections from UST’s Miguel de Benavides Central Library, including “Doctrina Cristiana,” the first printed book in the Philippines (published by the Dominicans and printed by the original UST press in 1593); Copernicus’s book on the heliocentric theory; and incunabulae (books before the invention of printing). Other events include the unveiling of Ramon Orlina’s glass-and-brass sculpture, Tetraglobal, modelled by Piolo Pascual and Charlene Gonzales; and the Manila conference of the International Council of the Universities of St. Thomas Aquinas. Established in 1611 through the donation of his personal library by Archbishop Miguel de Benavides, OP , the third bishop of Manila, founded and run by the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), UST was given the titles “Royal” by King Charles III of Spain in 1785, and “Pontifical” by Pope Leo XIII in 1902. It was declared “The Catholic University of the Philippines” by Pope Pius XII in 1947. Alumni include national heroes José Rizal, Marcelo H. del Pilar, Emilio Jacinto, Antonio Luna, Apolinario Mabini, Felipe Agoncillo and Claro M. Recto. (Most of the drafters of the Malolos Constitution were UST alumni.) Other alumni: Presidents Manuel L. Quezon, Sergio Osmeña, José P. Laurel and Diosdado Macapagal; Chief Justices Cayetano Arellano, Victorino Mapa, Ramon Avanceña, Jose Abad Santos, Roberto Concepcion and Andres Narvasa; and National Artists Nick Joaquin, Leandro Locsin, F. Sionil José, Bienvenido Lumbera, Ang Kiukok, Victorio Edades, Rolando Tinio, Daisy Hontiveros-Avellana, Ernani Cuenco, Arturo Luz, Ildefonso Santos and Gerry de Leon. UST is also the only university in Asia to have produced saints. The first Filipino saint, Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila, was a member of a Dominican Marian confraternity and was martyred in Japan in the 17th century along with Dominicans who studied and taught at UST. Even the first Vietnamese saint, Vicente Liem de la Paz, was an alumnus. In October 2007, in the biggest beatification in history, Pope Benedict XVI beatified nearly 500 martyrs of the Spanish civil war, including Fr. Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, a former master general of the Dominican Order, and seven other Dominicans, all of them alumni of UST.
