Thomasians in top 10 of board exam for high school teachers
18 April 2013, 11:07 p.m. - UST IMPROVED its standing in the licensure exam for teachers (LET), placing third in the roster of top-performing schools for secondary education and producing two topnotchers.
Results from the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) released today showed that UST had a 92.16-percent passing rate in the March LET for the secondary level, significantly higher than last year’s 86.84 percent. This year, 47 out of 51 Thomasian examinees passed the test, 43 of which were first-time examinees. In 2012, 33 of 38 examinees made the cut.
UST trailed behind University of the Philippines-Diliman (95.00 percent) and Saint Louis University (94.92 percent), which grabbed the top two spots in the roster of best-performing schools.
Leading the new batch of Thomasian teachers are Marieta Baysa, who scored 90.80 percent, and Maria Isabel Bautista, who got a 90.40-percent rating. Baysa and Bautista ranked seventh and ninth, respectively.
Thomasians did not make it to this year's top 10 list for LET-elementary, but UST's passing rate went up to 90 percent from 66.67 percent in 2012. Nine out of 10 Thomasians passed the exam, compared with two out of three examinees in 2012.
Talisay City College was the only top-performing school, scoring a 90.24-percent passing rate with 74 out of 82 students hurdling the exam. It was the only school that met the PRC requirement of a passing rate of at least 80 percent and a minimum 50 examinees.
The national passing rate for LET-elementary slid to 27.78 percent, with only 10,310 passers out of 37,117 examinees. Last year’s passing rate was 42.46 percent, with 13,925 passers out of 32,798 examinees.
For LET-secondary, the national passing rate rose to 39.61 percent with 15,223 successful examinees out of 38,433, from last year’s 24.85 percent. Lord Bien G. Lelay

World Bowling Champion Biboy Rivera Hitting the jackpot
QUITTERS never win.
Thomasian World Bowling Champion Engelberto Biboy Rivera indeed lived with this battle cry as he finally won the gold on a bigger stage, becoming the seventh Filipino World Bowling Champion last September in South Korea the same country where he bungled an Asian Games gold four years back.
It's not everyday that one is given the chance to be the World Champion, so I might as well make the most out of it, Rivera said.
Rivera bowled the perfect pitch to down seasoned Achim Gwarobski of Germany, 300-212, for the Masters gold medal that aligned him with Filipino bowling Hall-of- Famers Paeng Nepomuceno and Bong Coo. Rivera's flawless outing only happened for the 13th time in the tournament history.
Might without height
A 1997 UST Tourism graduate, Rivera originally wanted to be part of the UST Growling Tigers, having been a high school varsity standout at Don Bosco Makati. The five-foot-seven Rivera, however, could not crack the team because of his height.
But with the zeal of competition running through his veins, Rivera looked for another sport that would fit his physique and give him a chance to excel once more. And bowling was the perfect choice. From then on, Rivera joined various bowling tournaments. He won his first gold in the Youth Quarterly Finals in 1993. Rivera also has won gold medals in various local and international tournaments, including the Hongkong International Tenpin Bowling Championships (2004), the 17th Hongkong Asian Championships in the Doubles Division (2002), and the Asia Masters Champion (2001).
Rivera said consistency is of primordial importance in bowling since there is no defense in the sport.
I just always give my 100 per cent in every shot and in every frame, kaya maganda ang nagiging resulta, he said.
Rainbow after the storm
When he failed to pocket the Asian Games gold for the Philippines in 2002, Rivera vowed to redeem himself, under all circumstances. True enough, he made the pressure-packed perfect game in the World Championship decider despite a left knee patella injury.
I did not bother to think of my Asian Games debacle because it will only jeopardize my dreams of avenging my loss and becoming a World Champion, Rivera told the Varsitarian.
With the Masters gold medal, Rivera ended the Philippines 26-year title drought of the World Bowling Championships. Ollie Ongtawco was the last Filipino champion in 1979.
After the World Championship, the fight continues for the one-time 1996 Benavides Achievement Award recipient. Rivera is again gunning for gold in the ongoing 15th Asian Games in Doha, Qatar. In fact, Rivera skipped a tournament in Hong Kong and the World Cup qualifying meet to go full-time for the Asiad training.
I will still go for the gold especially since everybody is expecting much from me,†Rivera said. Winning a gold again would definitely vindicate that I am a no one-tournament wonder. Llanesca T. Panti
www.varsitariansportsmag.com/world-bowling-champion-biboy-rivera-hitting-the-jackpot
He has won the WTBA World Tenpin Bowling Championships in 2006 and the Asian Games gold medal for men's singles bowling in 2010. Rivera is also the recipient of the Philippine Sportwriters' Association (PSA) Athlete of the Year Award twice (in 2006 and 2011).
Rivera won 10 championships from the Southeast Asian level up to the world stage culminating in his 2006 World Championships win. He has won a gold medal in the 2001 Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur and in the 2002 Asian Championships in Hong Kong, he teamed up with fellow Filipino Chester King to win the men's doubles gold. He is also a regular fixture at the Asian Bowling circuit culminating in a runner-up finish in the Grand Slam finals in 2009. Aside from his 2006 World Championship win, he has won runners-up finishes from the World Cup back in 2010 and 2011.

She is a three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist. She has been recognized as the Philippines’ first woman world pool champion.
A member of the Philippine Billiard's team, Rubilen hails from the province of Cebu. She graduated from University of Santo Tomas. She made a name in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games by winning two of the gold medals staked in the women’s division. She is the protege of the local billiards godfather Aristeo “Putch” Puyat and under the intense drills of her coach of many years, Boyet Asonto.
She is the 1st-Runner Up in the 2006 and 2007 WPA Amway Women's World 9-Ball Championships in Taiwan and had also won the 2002 Asian 8-Ball Championship in Singapore and was the first woman to qualify in the men’s National Open finals.
In December 2007, Amite finished first in the women's 9-ball pool singles during the 24th Southeast Asian Games held in Thailand. In 2009, Amit won the Women’s World 10-Ball Championship, 10-4, against world 9-ball queen Liu Shin Mei of Taipei.

“The University of Santo Tomas gratefully looks back to July 24,1605, when Bishop Miguel de Benavides, O.P., the third Archbishop of Manila bequeathed a modest amount from his personal funds and his personal library collection for use in the establishment of a ‘seminary-college’ to prepare young men for the priesthood. “Thus, on April 28, 1611, the Colegio de Nuestra Senora del Santisimo Rosario, later named Colegio de Santo Tomas, was born in its original campus within the walled city called Intramuros. “On November 20, 1645, the College was elevated to the rank of a University by Pope Innocent X. King Charles of Spain granted the title “Royal University” to UST in 1785, for the exceptional loyalty shown by its administration and students who volunteered to defend Manila against the British invasion. “On September 17, 1902, Pope Leo XIII made the University of Santo Tomas a “Pontifical University” and in 1947, Pope Pius XII bestowed upon it the title “The Catholic University of the Philippines.” “The continuing increase in enrolment prompted the administration in 1927 to relocate the University in its present site in the Sampaloc district, along Espana St, Manila, which covers 21.5 hectares. “Inspired by its rich history, spurred on to impart wisdom and knowledge, enthused by noteworthy accomplishments, the University has remained steadfastly responsive to the needs and issues of the time as they occur, whether in the Philippines or elsewhere in the world. “Today, the University campus is considered a historic site and is a recognizable landmark in Manila and the country.”

Among the Thomasian Martyrs, some of them were canonized as saints and the rest are beatified. Rosa, St. Catalina, at iba pa. Interesting facts and trivia about the UST Museum.
The UST Museum's collection dates back to 1687, making it the oldest in the country, although the Museum was formally established in 1871.
The UST Museum’s collection was originally housed in the Intramuros campus, then transferred to the Sampaloc campus in 1936.
The UST Museum owns the finest and largest carved ivory religious image, a Crucified Christ, in the country.
Rev. Fr. Silvestre Sancho, O.P. established the University’s Annual National Painting Competition in 1941 and thereby paved the way for the growth of the UST Museum’s visual art collection.
The nucleus of the UST Museum’s collection was the gabinete de fisica, a collection of animal, mineral and vegetable specimens used as study aids by students of the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Faculty Medicine and Surgery.
The grand staircase leading up to the UST Museum is flanked by murals by Filipino masters Galo Ocampo and Carlos “Botong” Francisco.
While the University was occupied and used as a civilian internment camp for Allied nationals by the Japanese military during World War II, the UST Museum was closed. Only a handful of internees were allowed to work with the collection, cataloguing shells, coins and rare books.
When the International Council of Museums (ICOM) was established in 1949, the UST Museum was one of the first member-institutions.
The UST Museum’s Main Gallery was originally called the paraninfo or paranymphus, a large, multi-purpose function hall that was used for lectures, symposia and other academic activities.
The UST Museum’s Natural History collection is of great interest to researchers and students, because many of the specimens that were plentiful when they were collected are now endangered or extinct.
The UST Museum participated in the 1876 Philadelphia Exposition, the 1870 Exposition Universale, the 1883 Amsterdam International Expo, the 1883 Exposicion Nacional Madrid, the 1887 Exposicion General de las Islas Filipinas, the 1895 Exposicion Regional de Filipinas, and the 1902 Hanoi Exposition.
The UST Museum’s collection includes the Papal thrones used by Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II during their visits to the University of Santo Tomas, the Catholic University of the Philippines.
The UST Museum is located in the Main Building, the first earthquake-resistant structure in the country. It is built in 40 separate pieces, with the gaps filled in with tar and gravel.
The UST Museum features a diorama of Philippine endemic species that are either endangered or extinct.

UST posts 48.6 percent passing rate in Bar exams
22 March 2013, 6:37 p.m. - LESS THAN half of examinees from the Faculty of Civil Law passed the Bar exams, as the national passing rate plunged to the second lowest in history in what was described by the dean himself as a "bloodbath."
UST posted a 48.57-percent passing rate, with only 34 out of 70 examinees making the cut. Among the 34 who passed, 31 were first-time takers.
The national passing rate plummeted to 17.76 percent, equivalent to 949 out of 5,343 examinees, the lowest since 2000 and the second lowest passing rate in history.
Leading this year’s new batch of lawyers is Ignatius Michael Ingles (85.64%) from Ateneo de Manila, followed by another Ateneo student, Catherine Beatrice King Kay (84.72), and April Carmela Lacson (84.48) from University of the Philippines. Former Varsitarian editor in chief Nicolo Bernardo and features writer Tanya Justine Baldovino were among those who hurdled the Bar.
“Based on preliminary indications we should still be in the top six or seven. It is sad but the bloodbath is all over, not only for UST but also for other schools. While we may have gotten lower scores compared with the previous years, it is still better compared with many law schools,” Civil Law Dean Nilo Divina said in an interview.
Divina said the 2012 Bar examination was hard compared with the previous examinations. Only two percent of Bar candidates passed Remedial Law, which accounted for 20 percent of the examination.
Associate Justice Martin Villarama, Bar exams committee head, earlier announced that the Supreme Court had lowered the cut-off score to 70 percent from 75 percent due to the poor results. Divina said two justices proposed to lower the passing score to 68 percent, but were outvoted by the majority.
If the cut-off score was retained at 75 percent, only 343 of the 5,343 examinees would have made the cut. Villarama attributed the low passing rate to multiple-choice questions (MCQ), which was 60 percent of the exam. This year, the Supreme Court has decided to revert to the original format of 80 percent essay questions and 20 percent MCQ.
The 2012 Bar examination was held for the second consecutive year in UST last October. UST will remain host of the 2013 Bar examinations due to positive feedback from different Law deans. The successful Bar candidates will have their oath-taking on April 24 at the Philippine International Convention Center. Nikka Lavinia G. Valenzuela
