Dimalanta, Lady Polyester, 76
November 5, 2:30 p.m. -- UST’s premiere woman poet, Ophelia Alcantara-Dimalanta, succumbed to stroke yesterday. She was 76.
Dimalanta, born on June 16, 1934 in San Juan, finished her undergraduate and post-graduate studies in literature in the University. She became assistant editor of the literary section of the Varsitarian in her freshman year.
Her poems such as Montage, A Kind of Burning, and The Time Factor have become standard pieces in literature textbooks.
Dimalanta started teaching in 1953 and became dean of the Faculty Arts and Letters in the 1990’s.
She received numerous honors for her work, including the prestigious South East Asian or SEA Write Award in 1999, the Catholic Authors Award in 1995, and The Outstanding Thomasian Alumni Award in 2002.
Dimalanta was a founding member of Manila Critics Circle. In 1999, she established the UST Center for Creative Writing and Studies. She was named UST's writer-in-residence last year. Kalaine Nikka Kay C. GrafilVarsitarian
