New UST logo draws cheers, jeers
June 24, 6:29 p.m. - UST HAS unveiled a new logo, but many Thomasians are not exactly excited about it.
The new design encloses the University seal in a circle set in yellow. The outer black ring contains the words "UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS" and "MANILA 1611" in white color. The old shield-like seal is retained and placed at the center.
According to a memorandum issued by Secretary General Fr. Florentino Bolo, Jr., O.P., last June 21, the Council of Regents approved the revised design in a meeting that same day. But the logo soon became a hot trending topic on social networking sites soon after “UST QUADRI,” the Facebook page maintained by the Office of the Secretary General, uploaded a digital copy.
In less than two hours came a Facebook page called “No to UST’s new university seal." As of posting time, more than 7,000 Facebook users “liked” the page.
Here are some of the comments:
"There's too much going in the logo, a lot of yellow, black, and white—it's too disturbing," said alumnus Ian Anderson Rabino. "Stick to the principle 'less is more' and be tactful and regal in designing our beloved UST's logo."
"The previous seal makes Thomasians more proud because there is elegance in its simplicity and uniqueness," said senior Psychology student Sharlynn Miranda Tamayo. "All Thomasians must have a say on this issue since we all make up the University."
But alumnus Denz Villanueva said the incorporation of UST's name on the seal would make it easier to identify.
"Hindi pwedeng seal lang, dapat talaga may description kung ano yun. Parang produkto ‘yan eh, dapat may branding para makilala at bumenta," he said.
The University seal—the 13th design since 1619—is a light blue shield with gold frame quartered by the black-and-white Dominican Cross on which the sun of St. Thomas Aquinas is superimposed.
On its quadrants are the four gold symbols—the Papal Tiara, the lion derived from Spain's seal, the sea lion from Manila City's old seal, and the rose. They represent UST's pontificate, royal patronage of Spain, belongingness of the University to the Republic of the Philippines, and the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary, respectively.
The secretary general is yet to comment on criticisms on the new logo. Rafael L. Antonio

I don't understand the need of this logo. We still have the Quadri Logo dba? Yung Tounges of Fire spelling out the letters U-S-T. Ok na yun baket may ganito pa? I'm not a fan of round shape logos so I'd be biased here. Ok na yung dati, simple yet classy. So I'd go for NO! I don't like the new logo. It's interesting to know though, what made the officials approved this "new logo"? Did they even consulted the students or the alumni about this?

You don't need to spell out UST just to let the others know about UST. I say no to the new logo!

Unique yung previous design natin, although admittedly, maraming hindi nakakakilala, alam o m-identity kung ano yun. But, for a 400 year old institution, the oldest in Asia, let us maintain our originality, uniqueness and not follow a common circular design like most other school has done, 'wag tayong gumaya lang sa iba', let us retain our "unique and differently" designed logo.
My 2 cts worth, if we need to state the name of our university, the city and also, the year founded: then, place it on top, above the design- spell out UST and below at its center (atop the sunburst)..Manila 1611...hmmm why not try!

I liked the previous UST seal. Its squarish, as compared to the usual circular. It doesn't have any texts to identify what institution is it representing. It has many images that represents different aspects of the University. And I like the blue field. But...
The new seal ain't that bad either, for me. The original seal is still there, it was just incorporated inside a circular field and they placed some text around it. I admit I like the old seal better, but the new seal is just ok for me.

So ano na ba ang last say ng admin? Will they change the logo, stick to the old one, or create a different one altogether?
