World’s top philosophers featured in UST confab on Thomism and Asian cultures

IN 2011, the University of Santo Tomas will be celebrating its 400th anniversary.
Philosophy was one of the first two programs offered by UST since 1611, and it continues to be one of the cornerstone programs of Asia’s oldest university.
To commemorate UST’s quadricentennial, the Department of Philosophy under Alfredo Co will convene an international philosophy conference on the theme “Thomism and Asian cultures: Celebrating 400 years of dialogue across civilizations.”
The conference is supported by the UST Office of the Rector; Office of the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs; Graduate School and Faculty of Arts and Letters.
Philosophical organizations that have been invited: Conférence Mondiale des Institutions Universitaires Catholiques de Philosophie; Academie du Midi; World Union of Catholic Philosophical Societies; Philippine Academy of Philosophical Research; Philosophical Association of the Philippines; Philosophical Association of North Luzon.
The plenary speakers are: Hans-Georg Moeller of the University College of Cork, Ireland (president of Academie du Midi); Karl-Heinz Pohl of Trier University, Germany; Walter Schweidler of the Katholische Universitaet Eichstaett-Ingolstadt, Germany; William Sweet of St. Francis Xavier University, Canada (president of the World Union of Catholic Philosophical Societies); John Ozolins of Australian Catholic University; Piotr Jaroszynski of John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, Poland; Vincent Shen, chair of the philosophy department of University of Toronto, Canada; Tran Van Doan of National Taiwan University (president of the Asian Association of Christian Philosophers); Noel Sheth of the Jnana-Deepa Vidyapeeth, Pontifical Institute of Philosophy and Religion (vice president for Asia and Oceania of the Conference Mondiale des Institutions Universitaires Catholiques de Philosophie); Godfrey Igwebuike Onah, vice rector of Pontifical Urbaniana in Rome; and João J. Villa-Chã of Gregorian University in Rome.
