The Poetics of Plaza Mayor, UST By Ophelia A. Dimalanta
The broadest swath cut out Of the texts of history And spread from the massive Walls of this ageless structure Of ancient and timeless lore, Into its own imposing arch Of triumph, spruced up With trees lined up like sentinels On the watch, fragile and fiery By turns as sun and rain and Seasons dictate, the music Of the spheres inaudibly hovering In tune with formidable fountains Gracefully spouting the clearest water straight into swinging gates That lock in then spread out Moments of radiance propelled Forward and all over, all the wealth Of an age carved, carried aloft From vast interminable time.
II Pages of history spring up alive Recast in faces young and old, Fresh or scarred, become one Freely flowing hymnal, sun-lush Rising or waning or otherwise Moon-washed and settling upon Pathways where now and then Voices emanate, shrill or surging, Fretting or praying, loud or Silenced, as in a cloistered cell From this monumental edifice Into wider space, shored against The erosions of time and winds. St.Thomas is here in flesh and spirit In memory like lingering strains Of pure undefinable harmonies.
III Evenings set in like a solemn prayer, Even as traces of sounds remain, To hover as echoes from some distant Realm, the clearing sinks into a private Chamber far deeper than thought allows; Contemplation follows and walls Of the heart shut the world out. The spirit opens up more alive within In sacred rituals and avowals of faith And endless grace, bearing this vision Of old and forever new, a mission Moving forth into four centuries Of storied fame and way beyond, Thomasian to the truest, deepest core.

Aristotle, the Great Greek philosopher, stands on top of the Main Building of THE MOST GORGEOUS ROYAL AND PONTIFICAL UST. His statue was created by famous Italian Sculptor Francesco Monti, a faculty member in the College of Architecture and Fine Arts in the 1940s, and installed between 1949 and 1953.
Also created by Monti and erected between 1949 and 1953, the statues of great writers Calderon de la Barca, Sophocles and William Shakespeare are also seen atop the Main Building of THE MOST GORGEOUS ROYAL AND PONTIFICAL University of Santo Tomas.Text by SUX2BU Photos by marboysayno

The BENAVIDES MONUMENT was made in Paris in 1889 through funds collected among the faculty, students and friends of the university. Inaugurated in 1891, the monument is a bronze figure of Benavides on a pedestal facing UST. The base of the statue has the name of the sculptor and year of the make: TONY NOEL, 1889. The pedestal was decorated with the seals of the Dominican Order and the university, as well as plaques on which were written the history of UST and a brief biography of the archbishop.
The statue was blown from its place by an artillery shell during the Battle of Manila. The marble pedestal was totally destroyed. The Benavides Monument recovered and erected again in 1946 inside the UST Campus in Sampaloc.

A Piece of Europe: Divine UST
The first line in my poem "Ode to Alma Mater: Santo Tomas 1611" delineates the encroaching power and majesty of the nearly four century-old UST. The power to break in into one's consciousness because of her grandeur even if you're miles away from her location makes the precis of the poem. Aside from UST's rich history and traditions, the romantic appeal of her physical beauty adds power to her magnetic tug. The imposing Main Building is the nucleus of all the grandeur of UST, physical or otherwise. It is cosmological, metaphoric of supreme beauty: fine learning, art, and Catholicism. Look, for instance, at the vast structure from the sprawling greenery: statues atop the Main Building are reminiscent of European architecture. Finely molded contours of the structures of the great philosophers Aristotle, St. Albert the Great and Plato, in stillness, create an impression for the beholder that statues, sculpted in apotheosized form regardless of their status are identical to Catholicism. So, even a true-blue Thomasian who doesn't know the identities of the statues atop the Main Building would easily mistaken the figures of the great writers of tragedy Shakespeare, Calderon de la Barca, and Sophocles as saints. This is due to the architectural semblance of the Main Building to St. Peter's Basilica in the State of Vatican.
Fortifying the European ambiance in the campus, the UST administration decided to convert the parking space in front of the Main Building into an open plaza, which is now known as the Plaza Mayor. Since its transformation, domestic and foreign tourists have started flocking to the vast open square fronting the Main Building to have a sight of the imposing structure and at the same time take pictures.
The UST Campus itself is divine. It is an afflatus to all Thomasians who have artistic inclinations. It is no wonder then why the UST produces the finest poets, novelists, musicians, painters, philosophers and theologians.
